    Position Overview
  • NVDPL is looking for Auxiliary On-Call Library Assistant 2s to assist in all aspects of work that contribute to the successful operation of the Circulation team and contribute to the welcoming environment of the Library.

At NVDPL, we believe in building community and relationships, nurturing innovation while honouring tradition, embracing exploration, creativity, and fun, and supporting human potential and enabling excellence.- Reporting to the local Circulation Supervisor, this position will perform a variety of tasks as part of the Circulation team, including checking library materials in and out, registering patrons, collecting fees, resolving patron complaints, and reconciling monies received.

Service desk work at our Library requires a commitment to understanding and responding to community needs and a collaborative approach to service delivery.

What you'll be doing
In addition to the primary tasks noted above, aspects of the role will also include:

  • Providing excellent service to the public and responding to questions about routine library operations in person or on the telephone
  • Circulating library materials, collecting payments, packing and unpacking boxes
  • Registering patrons for library membership
  • Pulling, filing, sorting and shelving library materials
  • Assisting patrons with the use of selfservice tools
  • Assisting with daily cash reconciliation and bank deposits
  • Performing opening and closing procedures
  • Addressing problems with multifunction devices, and behavioural issues that arise in the public space

What you'll need to succeed

  • Flexibility and availability to work at any NVDPL library, including evening and weekend work, and understand that schedules may change to align with community needs
  • Ability to take initiative, problemsolve and handle difficult interactions
  • A commitment to service excellence, recognizing that the library serves members of the public from all walks of life
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively, courteously, and effectively with the public and staff in a busy public space
  • Ability to take initiative, ask for assistance, and step up to help
  • An understanding of and commitment to the principles of intellectual freedom, and inclusiveness
  • Completion of Grade 12 along with related experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and common office equipment
  • Physical capacity to handle heavy library materials and to stand for long periods
  • An understanding that auxiliary workers need to have broad availability and flexibility in their schedules to fill shifts often at the lastminute, around major holidays, and that the number of hours offered may vary greatly from week to week

  • Experience working on a circulation team in a public library
  • Experience in using an automated library circulation system
  • A comfort level with uncertainty and curiosity to learn more
  • The hourly pay rate for this unionized position starts at $23.39, plus 12% in Lieu of Benefits. This work requires flexible availability, including evenings and weekend shifts.

Compensation
