Major Responsibilities:


  • Conducts routine and nonroutine repair and maintenance on specialized equipment, such as, but not limited to, stair chairs, stretchers, loaders, and other specialized ambulance and patient care equipment.
  • Maintains and records inventory of equipment, ensuring that equipment is rotated and serviced to maximize efficiency through reduced downtime and equipment availability and orders specialized equipment parts as required.
  • Prioritizes work to ensure efficiency and timely return of equipment for operations.
  • Conducts full decontamination on ambulance units as well as equipment. Cleans, disinfects and sanitizes ambulances and other patient care equipment. Safely contains and removes biohazardous waste and garbage.
  • Performs general housekeeping duties within the garage and work site.
  • Ensures equipment is in good working order and maintained according to the required maintenance schedules.
  • Retrieves patient care equipment for Toronto Paramedic Services as well as other Emergency Medical Services (i.e. backboards, stretchers, etc.) from hospitals, stations and other locations. Evaluates the condition of the equipment to ensure it is in good working order, is cleaned and meets required standards.
  • Makes recommendations to the Superintendent regarding the development and implementation of sound preventative maintenance programs, and changes required to improve efficiency and performance of the Division's emergency patient care and patient carrying equipment.
  • Maintains appropriate records of preventative maintenance repairs and replacements for audit and control purposes, as required.
  • Stocks ambulances and response vehicles with required medical supplies and equipment. Replacing/removing old, expired, or broken packaging in vehicle inventory.
  • Performs replacement of certain equipment parts within ambulances such as power loader systems.
  • Tests, maintains and repairs other medical equipment, such as thermometers, glucometers, sphygmomanometers, laryngoscope handles, etc.
  • Inspects fire extinguishers, flares and other safety equipment.
  • Operates various motor vehicles and may be required to use various hand and power tools.

Key Qualifications:


  • Experience in the safe operation of hand, pneumatic and power tools.
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License.
  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience performing a variety of semiskilled/mechanical work.

You must also have:


  • Ability to perform general maintenance and repairs.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain any required certifications to conduct duties, such as but not limited to, maintenance and repair of stretchers, reconditioning of oxygen and suction delivery systems.
  • Ability to maintain fittesting requirements (N95 or higher) and wear personal protective equipment for extended periods of time.
  • Must be physically capable of performing required duties (i.e. including the ability to lift up to 23 kg independently).
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, and Outlook Mail).
  • Ability to read and interpret sketches, flow charts, schedules, equipment manuals.
  • Ability to tolerate working around equipment, devices / tools and vehicles that have been contaminated with blood and body fluids, parasites, pests, microorganisms and biohazards.
