Description

The Health and Safety Assistant is responsible for keeping track of required safety plans, audits, and training requirements and strives to ensure that plans and inspections are completed and up to date.

The Health & Safety Assistant may enlist the assistance of other staff to complete these activities.

This position is expected to uphold and comply with all regulatory, corporate and site specific policies, procedures, and safety rules.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Practice safe working techniques and reenforce the safety policies, guidelines, and procedures as set out by the Company and the Client.
  • Provide daily guidance and direction in HS programs at the employee/ supervisor level to ensure a common and effective approach.
  • Responsible for assisting in the identification of possible losses; evaluating the risk in such loss exposure; developing and implementing a plan to correct or prevent a loss and audit the plan to ensure its effectiveness.
  • Ensure that contractor personnel working on the property follow DSV policies and safety requirements.
  • Maintain and update as needed SOPs for all safe work practices and equipment and utilize them in the daytoday training.
  • Provide advice, assist, and audit line management to ensure that effective HS is implemented and working.
  • Perform and contribute to the Site Training Plan by conducting safety trainings, emergency response training, and coordination of modular training programs for the operation.
  • Ensure inspections by regulatory agencies are coordinated and deficiencies minimized and corrected.
  • Coordinate with Site Supervisor, Operations on facility deficiencies and monthly safety inspections
  • Maintain all logs and documentation associated with permits and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with maintaining the Site Preparedness and Emergency Plans & Procedures.
  • Review accidents and incidents which occur in responsibility and conduct audits, reporting and managing the corrective actions and upload reports into portal.
  • Maintain filing systems regarding worker training and safety.
  • Maintain working relationships with External Agencies and participate the Safety Team meetings.
  • Manage Team Base Risk Assessments and the process and regularly conduct training needs analysis.

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS, ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED:


  • Ability to work in a fastpaced environment.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, other business areas.
  • Willing to work different shifts as dictated by business needs.

MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:


  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Oneyear related experience and/or training directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Prior experience in safety observations/inspections, developing and implementing compliance strategies.
  • Knowledge of Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and other federal safety standards, principles, practices, and techniques.
