    Job Description

    The Virgin Islands Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) seeks a STEM Education Postdoctoral Associate. This person is responsible for assisting the ongoing research efforts of The Virgin Islands Institute for STEM Education Research and Practice (VI- ISERP ), a project component under the current NSF -EPSCoR award "Ridge to Reef" (R2R; Award # VI- ISERP is focused on "making STEM education excellence possible for every student", through programs and research on three key levels of education, pre-college, undergraduate & graduate, and STEM faculty early career stages. On the pre-college level, we support STEM teachers through the popular STEM Institute that provides professional development which enriches their capacity to facilitate STEM learning in the classroom. On the undergraduate level, we seek to increase recruitment, retention, and persistence of UVI's undergraduate students. Our last level focuses on mentoring and research infrastructure, providing support for, undergraduate and graduate STEM students along with faculty at the early career stages. In this position, this individual will work primarily with the STEM Institute with their current research agenda and professional development activities for STEM K-12 teachers. They will also be responsible for developing a new line of research in STEM elementary education. They will also have an opportunity to teach in the School of Education and develop curriculum.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    3) Demonstrated ability to complete personally assigned tasks with a high degree of independence;

    4) Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills (including examples of scientific journal publications) and ability to work with a range of partners and collaborators, including students, faculty, staff, professionals, organizations, and the general public;

    5) Demonstrated ability to work closely with and serve practicing teachers across a diverse range of teaching experience, subject area, and grade level with a high degree of motivation and respect;

    6) Strong desire to learn new skills and tools and receive instruction and training.

    Required Qualifications

    Education & Experience

    1) Ph.D. in STEM Education, Mathematics Education, Science Education, Engineering Education, Computer Science Education, or a related field

    2) Experience with teacher preparation programs for prospective and/or practicing teachers

    3) Background knowledge and skills in STEM elementary education

    4) Experience in STEM Education research and design

    5) Experience with data management and using qualitative and quantitative statistical or mathematical/computational software (e.g., Python, R, SPSS , NVivo , , and/or Tableau)

    Preferred Qualifications

    1) Design and implement research protocols

    2) Experience developing and coordinating PD training events and growing citizen science, science education or science communication programs on the elementary and secondary levels.

    3) Develop and implement interdisciplinary science, technology, engineering, and mathematics ( STEM ) curriculum focused on local themes.

    4) Experience with writing literary reviews, synthesizing articles, writing scholarly papers in STEM Education in general or in one STEM subject.

    5) Ability to coordinate and conduct tasks in remote formats, and experience with software to facilitate that work (e.g., Zoom and MS TEAMS ).

    Advertised Job Duties

    Development, execution, and publication of STEM education research. The VI- ISERP STEM Education Postdoctoral Associate will be responsible assisting VI-ISERP's STEM educators in data collection (evaluations, surveys, interviews), organization, analysis, conference submissions (at least 4 per year), presentations (at least 2 per year), and publications (2 per year).

    Mentorship and supervision of undergraduate research assistants and Master Teachers in data collection design, data collection, data analysis, and the implementation of Professional Development (PD) activities. This role may include but is not limited to: (1) regular communication and coordination with students and master teachers to ensure timely project completion, mentorship and supervisory development of student research. (2) developing research proposals for competitive funding consideration to support and sustain the teacher professional development program. Assistance with teacher professional development activities. This will include working with STEM Institute Co-Directors, EPSCoR Administrative staff, undergraduate research assistant, master and mentor teachers, corporate partners, and other stakeholders. Involvement in this process includes creating teacher training materials, distributing surveys and evaluations via survey monkey, distributing and collecting general photo release forms, developing invitational emails to teachers, assisting with the logistics of PD events (setting up rooms, acquiring supplies, working with caterers, etc.) The position will aid in other efforts by VI- ISERP and may include, assisting with the mentoring and research infrastructure component. Assist the School of Education in creating need-based assessments on STEM in Elementary education and Early Childhood Education. For example, teaching efficacy and perceptions of STEM in elementary education. Assist the School of Education in creating a Science for Elementary Teachers Certificate Program, parallel to our existing program in mathematics. The position may have an opportunity to develop curricula and teach in the School of Education in the preparation of elementary teachers.
