Position Summary


The Food Services Supervisor provides person centered care to residents to promote the comfort, safety, and quality of life of the residents of Finlandia Nursing Home/Finlandia Village.

The position is responsible to the Director of Support Services of Finlandia Village for the daily operations of the Food Service Department.


Some Key Responsibilities

  • Maintains a working knowledge of the _Fixing Long Term Care Act, 2021 _and the Food Premises Regulation of the _Health Protection and Promotion Act_
  • Responsible for menu and production updates and distribution
  • Management of food budget, costs, purchasing, ordering and inventory
  • Monitors and audits food service areas regularly
  • Design procedures for quality control for minimizing food waste/productivity and maintaining preparation standards
  • Conduct inspections of work areas, equipment, and evaluations of the facility to ensure compliance with the requirements of all applicable policies & procedures, rules, standards and/or health, sanitation and safety laws
  • Monitors the Food Service schedules and assists in the procedures for shift replacement and shift replacement when needed. Maintains payroll systems for the Food Service Staff
  • Investigate complaints regarding food service & equipment, and assist the Director of Support Services of any corrective action plans
  • Provide assistance to the Director of Support Services in developing and maintaining educational and reinstructional programs as well as job routines
  • Assists the Director of Support Services in the hiring, training, coaching and orientation of the Food Service department
  • Issues discipline up to verbal warnings to staff in accordance with employment agreements, if applicable, and the policies, procedures, and progressive discipline practices of the home
  • Provides general supervision of the dietary operation when the Director of Support Services is absent
  • Works closely with the Supervisor of Housekeeping and Laundry in monitoring infection control, safety, and sanitation programs. Replaces Supervisor of Housekeeping and Laundry when absent for staff contact
  • Participates in committee meetings as required
  • Develops and maintains a thorough working knowledge of the Finlandia Village Health and Safety Manual and associated Provincial Legislation. Performs Health and Safety inspections and investigations as required
  • Develops and maintains a thorough working knowledge of Finlandia's Resident Safety Policies. Performs other related duties as required

Qualifications

  • Nutrition Manager diploma or successful completion of Secondary School, postsecondary training or equivalent work experience in the culinary management
  • Membership in the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management an asset

Experience

  • One (1) to three (3) years of recent experience in institutional food service an asset. Finnish language skills an asset

Knowledge

  • Ability to read, write and understand oral and written instructions
  • Ability to read and interpret manuals related to equipment and systems
  • Must have knowledge of current Food Service procedures and best practices
  • Must have knowledge of safety rules and procedures and legislation pertaining to food service operations
  • Must have knowledge of commercial equipment, chemicals, and WHMIS legislation

Personal Suitability

  • Supervisory skills required to manage staff and resources
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills required to handle a variety of interactions with residents, families, staff and the public

Physical Demands

  • Extensive walking and standing
  • Some lifting, working in awkward positions required in putting away supplies
  • Exposure to heat from the kitchen area
  • Exposure to biochemical agents and wet floors
  • Stress related to time pressures and deadlines
  • Occasional irregular hours and overtime
