junior civil engineer - British Columbia, Canada - Interior Dams
Description
Interior Dams Incorporated is a growing, privately-owned engineering company specializing in dam safety, dike management, hazard mitigation (flood, mud/debris flows, etcetera) and water resources.
Presently, our team consists of five staff members (four full-time engineers, one full-time engineering technician, and one part-time admin staff) and an established network of specialized professionals who provide niche expert services in various disciplines.
Our firm provides the highest level of service. Our clientele consists mostly of Federal, Provincial, First Nation, municipal, and district dam and dike owners; however, our firm also provides niche specialized services to private industry, including mines and ranches.
Our firm is seeking a self-motivated engineer in training or engineering student who is eager to learn and develop new skills.
We intend to have you as an established team member such that you can support our engineering team with detailed design and analysis, and also assist with field monitoring of complex construction projects (such as instream projects, emergency work, heavy construction, etcetera).
Full-time: Beginning with a 4-month contract with a guarantee of 40 hours per week and the opportunity for permanent employment upon completion of the contract period.
5/hr (starting rate will depend entirely on experience and current capabilities, the future rate will be dependent on your performance, with no corporate cap), vehicle and travel allowance included, and company benefit plans are available to opt-in.
Place of work:
At home, in-office, remote, and in-laboratory (the professional services office is located in downtown Lake Country, BC, the geotechnical laboratory is located in Lake Country, BC, near Carrs Landing, BC, and on location, if travel is required).
You may be able to work remotely or at home as work permits (depending on your ability to coordinate and work independently)The role of the Engineer in Training will be approximately 60-90% in the office (including home office) and 10-40% in the field or laboratory.
Design new embankment dams in alignment with current regulatory standards and best practices.Monitor geotechnical investigations (test pitting, drilling, CPT, etc.)
Conduct resident engineering (field engineering under direct supervision) for civil construction projects (will typically include instream work such as coffer dam construction, dewatering, etc.)
Geotechnical testing and be able to support or conduct quality assurance/control work (may require setup of a temporary on-site geotechnical testing facility)
Be willing to conduct field surveys, inspections, and general data collection (training will be provided to learn how to conduct CCTV pipe inspections, drone surveys, bathymetric data surveys, underwater ROV operations, etcetera)
Provide engineering support through analysis, modelling, and design for a wide range of geotechnical and water resource projects (such as RS2, Slide2, Dips, Rocfall2, Settle3, PIX4D, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, etcetera)
Use QGIS to manipulate data and create figures for reports or other engineering work
Provide other general support work that may be typical within an engineering firm
A degree in geological or civil engineering
Enrollment or eligibility to enroll with EGBC as an Engineer-In-Training
A solid understanding of soil mechanics and soil classification
Experience with civil material testing, both laboratory (sieve, hydrometer, Atterberg, proctor) and field (compaction testing)
Must have some demonstrated on-site civil construction experience
Be willing to travel and work on-site (typically up to 5 days per month in the summer and possibly more in the fall, all other days in the office, lab or at home)
Have strong communication skills and be comfortable/able to liaison with clients, contractors, and local, provincial, and federal government
Have a BC Class 5 driver's license and a vehicle (compensation for vehicle use, off-road capable vehicle an asset)
Experience with industry geotechnical software packages (Rocscience, Geostudio, Itasca, etc.)
Experience with industry hydrotechnical/hydrological software packages (HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, HY-8, EPANET, etc.)
Experience with laboratory and field testing of geotechnical materials
Experience with drill logging and field classification of geotechnical materials
Knowledge of the Water Sustainability Act, Canadian Dam Safety Guidelines and Associated Technical Bulletins, and the BC Dam Safety Regulations
Experience with survey equipment, drones, and bathymetric surveys
Be able to self-teach from textbooks, online resources, technical bulletins, etcetera
Our office is different. This means that work should be flexible to support the life and lifestyle we want.
This means that you can select your own schedule provided that all your responsibilities are met (for example, if there is no scheduled field construction or office meetings that conflict, you can trade your Tuesday for a Sunday so you can hit the slopes on a powder day, or you could decide to work four 10-hour days so you can plan a three-day weekend getaway).
What kind of work do we do:
Project work typically consists of a mix of fieldwork and in-office/in-lab work for most of the summer, with desktop work in the winter and early spring.
Fall is typically our busiest field season, with several construction projects on the go between August and November. Spring often consists of some emergency work and a mixed bag of project start-ups and winter project wrap-ups.The time investment will vary significantly based on your preferences (life balance) and the project load and deliverables you take on.
Whatever those may be, as long as they are mutually understood and do not hinder overall productivity, we are flexible to make arrangements.
It is more important you are a person who is willing to commit to projects and see them through than commit to being available for a set amount of time for a set period.
In addition to the opportunity for a flexible schedule, we also encourage taking time off.Name:
