Job Purpose
The role of the Caretaker is to provide a clean and safe facility, to maintain the interior and exterior of the facility including the surrounding grounds.
The caretaker will provide clients and staff with a safe, clean, well-maintained environment and be able to meet all guidelines regarding health and safety pertaining to facility maintenance.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintains floors and stairs by vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping; shampoo carpets.
- Empties all trash cans and replace liners, clean receptacles as necessary;
- Cleans and sanitizes bathrooms including refilling and monitoring supplies;
- Maintains cleanliness of fixtures by cleaning and polishing; cleaning windows, glass partitions, and mirrors; cleaning windowsills and windows; maintains furniture by dusting and cleaning items that are not cluttered;
- General cleaning duties such as washing walls, door frames, etc, wiping machines, and equipment; cleaning sinks, countertops, microwaves, and refrigerators in kitchens;
- Makes adjustments and minor repairs to heating, cooling, ventilation, plumbing, and electrical systems; minor handyman duties such as changing light bulbs, minor repairs to plumbing and furniture/equipment; notify managers/supervisor concerning the need for major repairs; contact Operations team for repairs and maintenance; maintaining a log of daily activities and maintenance reporting
- Mixes water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications, proper labeling, dilution and use of all chemicals; spray insecticides and fumigants to prevent insect and rodent infestation;
- Monitors building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created;
- Clears debris from outside grounds including removing snow from sidewalks using snow shovels, and spreading snow melting chemicals; sweeping sand into sandbox;
- Moves furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks; sets up and takes down tables, & chairs to prepare for events such as meetings/classes;
- Maintains janitor closets in a clean, organized and safe manner; maintains janitorial equipment in a clean, safe and operable condition; inventory supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties; and reports to Operations team for ordering and purchasing.
- Accurately applies standard safety precautions and practices according to established protocols, safety guidelines and existing legislation to protect coworkers, the public and the environment;
- Must be able to work in an active standing/walking environment for long periods.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in caretaking, custodial or maintenance work.
- Working knowledge of building cleaning and operation of cleaning equipment.
- Must be able to complete WHMIS training
- Handyman experience including experience in minor maintenance of electrical, plumbing, etc.
- Understanding of best practices in cleaning and sanitizing.
- Must be able to lift up to 50lbs without injury or strain.
- Must maintain good personal hygiene and appearance.
Required Licenses and/or Certifications
- Criminal Occurrence Security Check
- Must complete a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check in good standing and within three months prior to first day of employment.
- Proof of English proficiency by obtaining a completed Canadian education, minimum CLB level 6, or IELTS 5.5.
