A whimsy missive on romance

We were sitting in the pub, solving the world's problems and the subject moved to romance. My friend asked me, "Romance. Can it be discussed? It has to be experienced, doesn’t it?" 

I thought about our conversation and so this whimsy missive was born. So with a wink and a note to the young at heart, here are some rambling thoughts on romance from a very old romantic.

Romance is not a science, but an art. When we talk to our lover, we talk not only with our words but with our eyes and our body. Now I am not talking about long-term love, but the initial rush of infatuation and romance that happens for many at the beginning of a relationship.

How does one talk to one's beloved? Everything we say, both through body language or verbally is vital when we communicate with our lover. How do we expect them to talk? Lovers both want to share everything in each other's life. We share dreams, agonies, passion, and we share goals, successes and failures. We share everything because we believe we are two bodies, with one heart.

Romance has its own flavour distinctive from ordinary life, romance gives us a different flavour, more alive and more, for want of a better word, ardent. Romance is a different emotion compared to all other emotions. It is much different compared to emotions such as anger etc. Anger is a negative emotion, but romance is a positive emotion or feeling. In romance, lovers may ignore every fault of his/her sweetheart and only finds everything good and glorify it. In love, the afternoon storm is as beautiful as the sunset. Such is the wonder of romance that it changes a totally can change a person world.

Coming back to communication, how do we do this when in love? Should we convey the depth of our love every single day? Does one talk only of love and nothing else?  We talk just about love because we do not want to kill the romantic mood. Does one only dream of good things and avoid every talk of anything negative? What and how does one communicate while romancing? 

Yes, it is true at the start, most romantic lovers talk only of positive things and avoid everything negative. It is also true that talk is mostly about love because we are in the middle of experiences that excite our imagination.  It is true that couples at the beginning dream of great things and avoid contemplating any negatives.

Romance is different. In romance, there is no place for anything that may kill the mood. Romance means talking of moon,  but not the storm, talk of the sunset and not the rain. However, you can talk about rains, and you can and should talk about storms. Romantics do not think about the fate of fallen flowers, but only admire the beauty of flowers smiling on the branch. Romance is different and it is great. The world has innumerable problems, and romance is much needed to create a positive atmosphere. Romance is a wonderful dream. When lovers wake up and find romance becoming love, then serious and real communications can start and the lovers can begin to get to really know each other.
