Grown Men Crying

Grown Men Crying

When Tottenham great Paul Gascoigne came off the field in the 1990 Semi-Final of the World Cup - he wore his passions on his sleeve and experienced players felt the weight of a nation on their shoulders that when England came up short in the penalty shoot out - it created massive hurt in the nation.   That was the last full year I resided in England, and I thought by emigrating to Canada that my affilation with England would begin to diminish as I settled down in my new country and consequently becoming a citizen of Canada.

Now in this particular World Cup my very roots and allegiances have been revealed and with the involvement of 5 Tottenham players (that is half of the Tottenham team) [Another quarter play for Belgium) and the rest for France (Lloris) Denmark (Erickson) South Korea (Son Heung-Min) - so that alone is something I have never seen as a Tottenham supporter and when Deli Alli got England second goal, it seemed like he was writing a script that was to be expected.  Even the Swedish players were like nothing like their superb performances including their loss to Germany (which was not consequential - but demonstrated that they outplayed Germany).  Now against England they looked second rate, but they did have THREE efforts on goal - only to meet a goalkeeper so inspired that he produced three World Class saves.

Notice just how much the memes of the past are being addressed by the "It Coming Home - We Still Believe" rendition

This is not a statement of being a 21st Century metrosexual man that I cry tears of joy now - but that these things are much more deeper than the surface or superficial tears of a momentary loss or victory - in the case of players it includes all the hours toiling in training and engaging the world in media fish-bowl and for the fans, especially the ones that have left the country of their birth - a reminder that years spent in the place of one's birth are very much a part of the fabric of our being as is making a new life in the place of our children's birthplace.

This 2018 World Cup in Russia is now extra special for me whether England win or do not win this World Cup.

Unfortunately Chris, both Belgium and Holland have similar experiences of having squads that should have won the World Cup but did not win the World Cup. Individually both era's of the Golden generation was a chockablock of great players. France simply cut off the channels and did not let Belgium run at the today. Once Lukaku's supply line was cut off he became a passenger that the team was carrying. It made no sense playing Chadli just because it worked against Japan and Brazil. Playing Dembele (as good as he is) was not a great idea because he is a defensive midfielder but one who is also aging. By the half-way stage France had pretty much figured out the Belgian tactics - so Roberto Martinez needs to carry some of the blame for this defeat.

Remember that Holland's time should have won at least two World Cups only to see that golden generation lose to Argentina and West Germany. Later they did lose to Spain's golden generation but by then Spain was already a proven winning force on the global stage. Belgium (like Tottenham) have won nothing - and it does include THREE Tottenham players :-) How else can you explain the golden generation failing at the Euro's beaten by Gareth Bale and Wales 3-0. If you look at the video of the 1990 World Cup, your point is well taken about a brazen and hostile press that truly pissed off the England team in 1990, so much so the team cut off all media and did not even know how much love and support they were coming back to and the heroes welcome surprised them. This latest England team are so relaxed that they are not phased about the press and the one time the press made an error of judgement, it quickly resumed back to the fun spirited ways of the team. The irony is that the 1990 England team would have crushed this 2018 England team - it had a fearsome defense that would shut Harry Kane down and a much more experienced midfield - but of course the current England team would have won the penalty shoot out - because these young guns England have maybe benefiting from being carefree and interacting with the public greatly through social media. These kids are having a laugh - but in a strange way it is a similiar camaraderie the 1990 team developed, except that team had no idea of the appreciation of the British public for them. This team can feel ALL the fan love.
