"Mad as hell and not gonna take it any more!"

"Mad as hell and not gonna take it any more!"

An email notification today almost had me launch into a massive rant here.

Why?

I loathe the automated H.R. email responses to people who have sought employment with a company. I know it is legally sound and prudent for them to be as mealy-mouthed as humanly possible but wouldn't it be refreshing to come upon a company which decided that a human response would be preferable? To wit, here's what I received:

"Thank you for submitting your resume to <name of corporation>  for consideration.
"We are fortunate to have many qualified candidates apply to each of our positions. We have reviewed the qualifications of each candidate and after careful consideration, we have determined that the credentials of other candidates may better fit our needs at this time.
"Please accept our best wishes and thank you for your interest in <name of corporation>."
Cordially,
Human Resources
<name of corporation>
"Cordially." Really?
For starters, I didn't just submit my resume. I was interviewed by two actual humans. We had, I thought, an insightful and illuminating conversation.
But, before I let loose with my best Howard Beale, I performed the STOP exercise:
Stop
Take a breath
Observe
Proceed
My wife, a mindfulness based stress reduction consultant (www.wakeupkate.com) has managed to teach me to effectively manage at least some of my filters!
I guess I just need to resign myself to the simple fact that most corporations are at their core and of necessity, heartless beasts driven by quarterly results and every country's version of Bay or Wall Street.
I can make the choice to play in their arena or stay in my own backyard where I can influence the type of clients I pursue, attract, and occasionally keep.
So, rather than jump head first in the dangerous deep waters of reaction vs. response, I am taking the high road.
I hope the corporation spurning me does well and that the preferred candidate prospers and thrives.
In the meantime, I am back pounding the business development trail.
So, encore, if you know of someone seeking Clarity, Simplicity and Wit in their brand development and/or copy, I am open for service. Send them to www.donkerrwrites.squarespace.com if you don't mind.
Whew. That kinda feels better now!

Instead it was a petite rant, and hugely forthcoming. I do like the STOP exercise. Need to implement that strategy more often when driving the streets of Shanghai. The thing is that the heartlessness doesn't often stop there. Even once you joined the company, it is hardly as if human resources care for the staff. They only appear to concern themselves with how they look to management.

How inconsiderate to send an automated rejection after you interviewed in person Don Kerr. I still believe in manners and the human factor! Maybe they did you a favor.

That's too rude to downgrade someone with a show of insensible response! Isn't that harsh reply from harsh recruiter (HR)?
