Physical Intelligence - Day 19
Last couple of days have become PIE DAYS. That is, I gave up all resistance after opening the fridge to snack away at a family size Apple Pie and continuing into today, a family size Blueberry Pie. There was no sign of delayed gratification and the extent of the nibbling shows up in pretty straightforward visual. Where there was half an Apple pie yesterday, there is no apple pie today and where there was near complete Blueberry Pie today, there is a quarter left. That I have lost 4lbs is good but compared to where I was this time last year, I came off a much bigger baseline and got myself 2lbs under 200lbs. In all by this time last year I had lost four times the amount of weight under comparable gym efforts. That is the extent of my nibbling. There is also another mindset that I have noticed. I am beginning to treat gym as a "job" and the pie snacking is a psychological payment system. This is not an act of rewarding myself for habit reduction, this is psychological payment for engaging the job of "gym". In this regard how different is this behaviour to that which is described by the term "comfort food".

A "job" mindset or a habit is still mechanical. We mechanically substitute one habit for another because we are habituated. It is a habit to create definitions of existence. That is not what FLOW is. The flow experience is not a habit but an interruption to our daily habits. If exercise became a habit, I would not need to resort to think of it as a job because I would have removed a justification for engaging exercise but replaced it with a pattern. That is not physical intelligence - until I am completely in flow with this action we call exercise it does not even begin to be called a lifestyle - which is still another habit. When I lose sense of time and I am engaged in action which neither requires definition or a result, then that is a flow experience. Is flow experience all good? Not so. Habit can form from over indulgence of flow experiences and this habit is called addiction. For me physical intelligence becomes intelligence when health is a flow and not a habit but I am far removed from that and so exercise is not a flow experience for me, it is work. That I call this work a job simply relegates this work to the mundane. I can envisage physical intelligence, but I am far away from living it. Could turning habits into a stairway to heaven move me closer to living physical fitness as a flow experience? That has not yet proven itself to be true and this mechanical view is not liberating, it is a reminder that physical fitness is a climb and not a flow. Yet I have seen in a few people it be a flow, so in that regard I don't have what they have but there is the possibility of a tipping point between where this is habit to where it is a way and that way is a flow experience.
