Buzz :  Prisoners of Assumptions and Habits

Ali Anani "On personal and business levels we need to have the courage to escape from habits of best practices and assumptions"

I am in agreement with Ali Anani that we are prisoners of assumptions and habits but I see escape differently.  We as a consumer led society are not anywhere evolved to break the chains of best practice mentality.   We are both complicit and accomplices in the daily drama of consumption and while we may seek of freedom, too many institutional forms of power and control impinge on us.  The late and great Patrick McGoohan could see this in the 1960's when he created the cult British TV series "The Prisoner".  It is similar to Plato's allegory of the cave but the cave did not consist of today's technology and complex network structures - so think of this series as more relevant to our present day society.

Our society today is still as similar as the utopia facing Number Six and the dystopia that Number Six awakens to, that others do not see.  That type of prisoner is what we are, one where we are not held by the point of a gun but willfully a part of the system that we are highly dependent on.  Most of us do not grow our own food, many of us would not know where to get clean water if it was not pumped to us and we would descend into anarchy if the economic or logistics system should ever fail us.  Kelly Haws, a researcher at Vanderbilt University why consumers are "partners in crime" in the economic model we are all dependent on in the West.

Employees are the fuel necessary for the existence of human resources as a profession, but other professions have their pitfalls also whether it is marketing ideologies or project management ideologies.  Today we continue to use big picture words to describe the annihilation of human paid work and the following ad from Deloitte is one that I wish will be a self-fulfilling prophesy for the HR profession itself, that rule based professions such as HR are replaced by robots, just as much blue and white collar workers are, for then HR will be raised by its own petard of best practice.

So no matter how we are marketed to or turned into resource by HR, the one best practice we must stop is treating "Being Human" as a best practice.  Being human has to be a wise practice,  but that wisdom is a long, long way off.  We can only improve the creature comforts of the societal corporate and economic prison we acquiesce to, but transformation is at the individual level.  Even if we know the tricks and Wizard of Oz processes that we engage everyday, our wisdom level has not developed yet, there is an infancy to wisdom which we can see begin to percolate but we need to wise enough to know that progress at an individual level is no proof of concept at a global level - and now CityVP Manjit wants to show you another advert 😃
