Harbour Assistant
(6-month contract, 40 hours per week)

This position is a 6-month contract (April - October). Scheduled shifts on weekdays and weekends on a 40-hour work week.

ummary:


Reporting to the Harbour Master, the Harbour Assistant will assist with beginning and end of season Operations, including maintenance duties.

This role will provide exceptional customer service, assist with preparations for cruise ships and supporting daily Harbour operations in the absence of the Harbour Master.


Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Assist Harbour Master in preparing the Harbour for boaters at the beginning of the season, including maintenance duties, and assisting with end of season operations in the fall.
  • Prepare for cruise ships to visit the Midland Harbour, by setting up security fencing, completing security sweeps of the Harbour and assisting the cruise ships with berthing.
  • Support daily Harbour operations in the absence of the Harbour Master by ensuring tasks are completed in a timely manner and standard operating procedures are followed, as well as adherence to the Harbour's Security Plan.
  • Assist with the Visitor Information Centre tourism duties.
  • Provide high standards of customer service to individuals using our Harbour.
  • Operation of a VHF radio.
  • Collect boater registration fees.
  • Assist boaters in and out of assigned berths.
  • Perform daily outside cleanup, maintenance, and garbage removal.
  • Daily maintenance of the various floral displays (weeding and watering).
  • Perform special maintenance duties such as painting, cleaning/stocking. washrooms, resupplying vending machines/laundromat, and Harbour projects.
  • Assist with training Harbour Summer Students on general practices at the Harbour.
  • Provide assistance to Harbour Students on best practices.
  • Adherence to all Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.
  • Wear personal protective equipment as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:


  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Certification in First Aid/CPR & WHMIS is an asset.
  • VHF radio license.
  • Ability to process cash transactions & balance cash at the end of each shift.
  • Knowledge of boating and of Georgian Bay is an asset.
  • Knowledge of local tourism amenities.
  • Knowledge of lawnmowers and line trimmers.
  • Some knowledge in horticulture (flowers & trees) is an asset.
  • Class "G" Driver's License in good standing is required.

Effort/Physical Demands:


  • Physical demand requires standing, sitting, lifting, crouching, and walking.
  • Visual attention for health and safety compliance and personal safety while on the job.

Working Conditions:


  • Approved CSA safety boots must be purchased by students and worn at all times.
  • Staff shirts will be supplied by the Town and must be worn at all times.
  • Work in all weather conditions.
