Position Description


The Labourer is responsible for the overall delivery of the home preparation and cleaning, as well as site cleaning and safety.

The performance of the duties must ensure a quality approach to all employees, customers, tenants, managers and suppliers.

All responsibilities must be performed in a manner consistent with the Tartan vision, mission, and must comply with all company policies and procedures.

We are currently looking to fill Labourer positions at our EdenWylde / Idylea sites in Stitsville.

Hours of Work: 6:30/7:00am - 4:00/4:30pm

Major Responsibilities:


Labourer, Level 1

  • With no instructions, and collaborating with others, load and unload construction materials and move materials to other construction sites within the development.
  • Daily moving, cleaning and inventory of tools and equipment around the site independently.
  • Prepare the house for painters, including scrubbing and preparing all paint surfaces independently.
  • Prepare floors by vacuuming, mopping, pulling nails and scraping independently.
  • Prepare the house for carpenters and trades by pulling nails, sweeping, vacuuming and washing and sanding any surfaces independently.
  • Perform adjustments and touch ups to the homes as per the requirements and general guidelines set out by the Site Superintendent.
  • Daily collection and disposal of debris across the construction site, including common areas (site office) and houses using rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows and other equipment independently. This should be done while ensuring compliance with waste removal programs.
  • Lock and unlock houses at the beginning and end of each shift independently.
  • Locate standpipes and ensure water is turned on for each box independently.
  • Drive the Bobcat, moving materials around site as required with mínimal instruction.
  • Snow removal and shoveling of drives and walkways during the winter months independently.
  • Assist tradespersons as directed by Site Superintendent.
  • Install guardrails, barriers, and other safety measures independently.
  • Install highdensity foam independently under the direction of the Site Superintendent or Finishing Foreman.
  • Relocate and ensure proper functionality of construction propane and electric heaters as required if proper training/certification is in place. Ensure heat has been disconnected appropriately at the end of the shift.
  • Review, assess and report health and safety issues to the Health and Safety Representative and/or Site Superintendent, including ensuring protective gear is worn.
  • Demonstrate high compliance and advocacy for health and safety practices.
  • Provide status reports to the Site Superintendent on tasks and raise concerns or issues daily.
  • Provide proactive status reports that impact next steps of the construction process (look ahead).
  • Install required items such as stairs and railings and temporary fixtures as requested by Site Superintendent or Foreman.
  • All other duties as required by the manager.

Statement of Qualifications:


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Highschool diploma is preferred.
  • 23 years of training or experience related to construction would be an asset.
  • Prior experience as a labourer for a highvolume residential home builder is considered an asset.
  • Ability to follow instructions, and independently coordinate several simultaneous tasks while staying focused, paying strong attention to detail and maintaining a positive attitude and flexible work style.
  • Experience dealing with tools and machinery, includes machine skills: rough grading, etc.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items up to at least 40 lbs on a consistent basis throughout the day.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to complete tasks independently as per the prescribed schedule/timelines.
  • Selfmotivated with the ability to work well independently, and a willingness to learn.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with colleagues, trades, and supervisors.
  • Current valid certifications in Working at Heights, Forklift, Propane and Natural Gas, First Aid, WHMIS 2015 and Health and Safety Awareness would be a strong asset.
  • Drive the Bobcat, moving materials around site as required.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle to drive around the site throughout the day to accomplish tasks as per the outlined schedule.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks based on various schedules
