Position Overview


Working as an integral member of the Community Planning Department in achieving the City's land use and growth objectives, the position is responsible for the supervision of the Community Initiatives team of the Policy and Community section.

The incumbent oversees the development of area specific plans, related policies, and the implementation framework for Major Transit Station Areas (MTSA) and other strategic intensification areas.


Responsibilities
The Coordinator of Community Initiatives will be responsible for:

  • Provide advice and information to the public, Council, staff, development industry, and other external agencies related to the Community Initiatives team.
  • Champion a positive departmental culture and the City's corporate values in managing the daytoday activities of the Planning Policy team, which includes supervising the performance and professional growth of staff on the team.
  • In collaboration with other department teams and internal partners, ensure a seamless customer experience, align policy initiatives and adapt workplans and team resources according to emerging priorities.
  • Monitor the ongoing effectiveness of area specific plans, related policies, and implementation framework, and carry out any necessary planning studies to support MTSAs and other strategic intensification areas.
  • Negotiate and resolve referrals, deferrals, and appeals to all work related to the team, guiding team members in problem solving and delivering good planning outcomes.
  • Appear before the Local Planning Appeals Tribunal to give expert Planning evidence on the City's behalf, supporting staff in such appearances.
  • Develop, prepare and/or or coordinate staff reports and recommendations, presentations at neighbourhood meetings, open houses, and public meetings of standing committees of Council.

Requirements:


Qualified applicants have successfully completed a four (4) year University Degree in Planning or related field and hold membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners (MCIP, RPP) or equivalent.

The role requires at least five (5) years relevant professional planning work experience, preferably at the municipal level. A thorough knowledge of the Ontario Planning Act regulations and procedures and other related legislation is essential.

Proven leadership ability to lead and empower a team of planning professionals is required along with the ability to collaborate with government, industry, community, City Council and corporate partners, make sound recommendations and navigate competing priorities and agendas successfully.

Effective communication skills are essential as is a commitment to providing exceptional customer services.
