    Children's Support Worker - Vancouver, Canada - The Salvation Army

    Description

    The Children's Support Worker will provide a day-to-day facilitation of the children's program at Kate Booth House. The incumbent will primarily focus on organizing and implementing the morning school program. Other responsibilities will include planning events, recreational/educational activities, assistance with school work, emotional support and teaching of non–violent behaviors.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Responsible for children's day-to-day program at Kate Booth House which will encompass the following:

  • Assisting with children's field trips, crafts, and other recreational activities
  • Provide childcare during appointments and emergency situations
  • Assist children to focus on issues of self-expression, personal feelings, expressing anger in healthy ways, building of self-esteem, positive non-violent play skills, and decision making skills
  • Complete regular logging related to children
  • Mediate conflict between children or between parent and child relationship
  • Assist in planning, preparation, and execution of the Kate Booth House Annual Christmas Party and Annual Summer Picnic
  • Assist in planning birthday parties and other special days for residents
  • Other duties assigned by the Children's Case Worker or Executive Director
  • At times the Children's Support Worker may be called to be a part of the Caseworker team and aid in the following manner:

  • Provide emotional support to the women in the house
  • Do initial phone screenings, take crisis calls, and do intakes
  • Report disclosures of abuse to MCFD/VACFSS
  • Record relevant information in resident's Daily Log and in other necessary forms and reports
  • Maintain statistical records as assigned
  • Perform clerical work as required
  • Assist with meals and chores with residents
  • Assist residents regarding maintenance of guidelines as per resident's orientation booklet
  • Provide residents with transportation when needed
  • Care for daily needs of residents
  • HOURS: Sunday-Thursday 12:30pm-9pm

    QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Education/Certifications:

  • Child and Youth Worker Diploma, E.C.E. Certificate, Social Services Diploma, or equivalence in related education/experience
  • Training in the PEACE (Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Counselling, and Empowerment) Program is an asset
  • Experience:

  • 1-2 years of experience working with children and youth
  • A relevant understanding of and in the field of Domestic Abuse, particularly its effect on children who have witnessed violence.
  • Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Relevant understanding of the situation of women who have experienced violence in their intimate relationships, and their children.
  • Excellent written, verbal communication and presentation/training skills; ability assimilate information and communicate with various constituents.
  • Excellent writing and oral skills
  • Understanding of the needs of victims of absolute homelessness and Domestic Violence
  • Understanding of the Cycle of Violence
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Ability to teach and organize group meetings
  • Must be comfortable in using the computer and other database programs.
  • Valid BC driver's license and access to a vehicle while on shift is required (driver's abstract required)
  • Criminal Record Check for working with children and/or vulnerable adults
  • First Aid and CPR certificate
  • Food Safe Level 1
  • PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people (e.g. race, ethnicity, age, class, sexual preference).
  • An ability and willingness to work with children of all ages and cultures
  • Must have good conflict resolution skills.
  • Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent.
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening.
  • A clean drivers abstract.
  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.
