We are currently looking for a Utility Operator to join our Power Production team in a permanent position. Reporting to the Hydro Superintendent, you will ensure the safe and efficient operation of all hydro generating facilities.


As a Utility Operator:


You will support the hydro system with expertise and leadership by having and maintaining a strong working knowledge of the operation of the hydro system, including generating units, controls, plant auxiliary equipment together with a good understanding of all equipment associated with civil works and water control.

You have a demonstrated understanding of all operations related to water management activities including snow pack determination, spill calculations and inflow predictions as well as production generation scheduling, system troubleshooting/restoration, and emergency manning of stations.

You will participate in unit overhauls, all maintenance activities associated with system equipment and civil works as well as issuing and holding of safe work permits.

You may be temporarily assigned to other locations to assist other areas when required and will be expected to travel throughout the province.

You will be required to participate in regulatory training and be willing to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills.

You may be required to travel to other Nova Scotia Power sites for extended periods of time.

You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.

You will assure compliance with environmental regulations as they relate to the Hydro Environmental Management System (EMS).

Your primary residence must be located within 30 minutes of the Sheet Harbour Hydro depot, and you will be required to take on call rotation and work other than normal hours and/or in extreme conditions.


What skills will make you successful?
You recognize yourself in most of the following competencies, and where possible possess the skills and experience listed below:
A Grade XII education or equivalent and a strong aptitude in the electrical or mechanical field are required. A diploma in an electrical or mechanical discipline would be an asset. You have proven problem resolution skills and the flexibility and ability to adapt to rescheduled assignments.

You must be a strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills, a strong computer aptitude and the ability to deal with multiple tasks and demands.

You must have the skills and physical capabilities to perform all duties, including working at considerable heights and within watercourses.

You must hold a valid Nova Scotia Driver's License with a minimum of 2 years driving experience and provide a driver's abstract satisfactory to NSPI.

Previous experience in Control Room operations, Hydro operations, or with operations and maintenance associated with wind and tidal power generation would be an asset.

Hours towards an overhead crane operator certificate would also be an asset.


Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities:


  • Must be able to lift a range of 1766 lbs. from waist to overhead on a mínimal to frequent basis
  • Able to carry 2566 lbs. with one or two hands
  • Use a range of grip strength from simple to firm grasp with turning motions
  • Use upper and whole body strength to push and pull 2050 lbs.
  • Perform static reaching from shoulder to overhead occasionally and frequently at waist and lateral level
