The Epidemiology team is part of the Strategic Planning and Performance division and works to understand the distribution as well as determinants of the occurrence of disease in Alberta.

The Epidemiology team also works to understand how the occurrence of disease affects health care service utilization in Alberta.

This work directly supports Government of Alberta leadership to develop policies that guide the health care system in Alberta and policies that improve the health of Albertans.


Role Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Director, Epidemiology and Surveillance, the Health Data Scientist position has two core functions:
Health Analytics Application


This function requires advanced health analytic expertise and experience with administrative health care system data to create descriptive, prescriptive and predictive analyses that support Government of Alberta priorities.

This function requires excellent written and verbal communication. The ability to conduct, synthesize and communicate complex analyses for stakeholders with different levels of analytic experience is critical.

Health Analytics Leadership

This function requires leadership experience to advance the analytic priorities of the Government of Alberta.

Examples include supporting the implementation of a provincial health analytic strategy, the development of a secure analytic environment for external stakeholders and the development of short term as well as long terms plan to acquire data.


This function requires the ability to collect, synthesize and advocate for Analytics and Performance Reporting Branch priorities with internal as well as external stakeholders who may have different priorities than the Analytics and Performance Reporting Branch.

Qualifications:


A University Degree in a related field (epidemiology, health sciences, data science, statistics, mathematics), and a minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible experience.


  • Equivalencies may be considered directly related education or experience on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

  • Programming in SAS, R, and/or Python
  • Working with large health system administrative datasets and data linking
  • Epidemiologic analytic experience
  • Health care system analytic experience
  • Developing and evaluating analytic models
  • Stakeholder engagement and leadership
  • Formal training in data science
  • Strong Geographic Information Systems (GIS) experience
  • Strong programming experience in SAS
  • Strong data acquisition experience
