About the Role:

- always with a core focus on accountability, the public interest, and a finger on the pulse of the stories Canadians will be talking about tomorrow. This position is based in Ottawa, ON while working under the leadership of the Managing Editor (Digital and Breaking News). This is a Group 4 position under the current collective agreement.


You'll be working on things like:

  • Pitching, developing, and executing daily assignments primarily for but also serving multiplatform demands across the network
  • Leveraging a network of sources to deliver breaking news and pitch enterprise and investigative stories in the public interest
  • Seeking out reflective, compelling, and diverse voices to profile in news coverage
  • Executing political coverage to the highest standard for Parliamentary news events such as budgets, political conventions, elections, etc.
  • Participating in editorial meetings, fostering an environment of collaboration, creativity, debate and positive feedback
  • Working with a variety of national and network stakeholders to put Global News reporting at the top of the national conversation
  • Working collaboratively with a national team of online, radio and television journalists to adapt Global News stories across different platforms.

If you have the following...

we want to hear from you:


  • Diploma/Degree in Journalism/Broadcasting or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience political reporting
  • Highly functioning in both online and broadcast, with the ability to jump from writing breaking news for online to filing a radio voicer, then producing scripted or live content for television
  • Experience with the fastpaced environment of a wire service or comparable digital platform in building a breaking news file is an asset
  • Proven track record of impeccable storytelling, impeccable editorial judgment, and a proven ability to make fast, editorially solid decisions in a highpressure environment
  • Proven experience in diverse and inclusive storytelling
  • Proven understanding of scripted and/or live storytelling for broadcast
  • Indepth knowledge of politics and current affairs across the country
  • A role model who sets high editorial and ethical standards and represents best journalistic practices including adherence to journalistic principles and practices as they relate to conduct on social media
  • Proven track record of fair, balanced, impartial reporting, along with excellent communication, organizational and multitasking skills
  • Ability to adapt to everchanging workflows and technologies
  • An amazing attitude that will inspire, engage and motivate colleagues
  • French language skills will be considered an asset
  • A proven track record or a strong interest in covering the Canadian military and domestic procurement issues and/or gender equity policies including abortion access will be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to generate enterprise stories using access to information laws will be considered a strong asset
  • The ability to build constructive source relationships with all parties on the Canadian political spectrum is a requirement, as is an existing network of sources from all political parties
  • Experience reporting from and/or building highly constructive relationships with communities outside of the Ottawa bubble will be considered an asset
