    Description

PBP is seeking a Development Manager to join the small but effective team of our award-winning organization. This position will help us empower thousands of people to participate in real democracy, through a process that has been called "revolutionary civics in action". You are perfect for this role if you are able to quickly turn ideas into clear and compelling funding proposals, while building and managing a portfolio of funder relationships.

The Development Manager is responsible for managing PBP's institutional fundraising and individual giving. This includes managing fundraising research, cultivation, grant writing, and administration, while also supporting and working with other staff to reach fundraising goals. You will be able to build on a strong existing foundation for this work and the expertise of our current Development Manager, who is advancing to a new programmatic position with PBP. This full-time position reports to one of PBP's Co-Executive Directors and is based in either New York City or Oakland.

    About PBP

For 10 years, the Participatory Budgeting Project (PBP) has empowered people to participate in democracy through revolutionary civics in action. Participatory budgeting (PB) is a democratic process in which community members directly decide how to spend part of a public budget. It gives people real power over the money that affects their lives. We create and support PB processes in cities, schools, and public agencies across the United States and Canada to address deep community needs, develop new community leaders, and make public budgets more equitable and effective. Through our work with partners in over 30 cities, we have engaged over 534,000 people in deciding how to spend $337 million.

    Key Responsibilities Institutional Giving

    • Identify and research funding prospects, concentrating on government, private and corporate foundations.
    • Manage the cultivation of relationships with institutional funders and funder prospects, through outreach, networking, and events.
    • Draft grant applications and reports for foundation, corporate, and government grants.
    • Work with program staff to submit grant and contract reports and other funding requirements.
    • Maintain a calendar of grant application and cultivation deadlines
    • Engage staff and board in contributing to prospect identification, cultivation, and proposal development, including leading fundraising training and capacity-building.

    Individual Giving

    • Work with the Communications Manager to plan and implement fundraising campaigns, and help to write and develop content for appeals.

    General Development

    • Provide staff and boards with monthly training, support, or tools necessary to contribute effectively to fundraising.
    • Build and maintain effective fundraising systems, including individual giving plans, donor and prospect databases, and donor communication.
    • Perform other development-related tasks as needed
    • Other general organizational duties including engagement in staff meetings and retreats, facilitation of staff calls, and participation in organization wide fundraising campaigns.

    Desired Experience, Strengths and Skills

    The ideal candidate will have:

    • At least three years of demonstrated experience in a fundraising environment, with progressively increasing responsibility
    • Demonstrated success raising over $1 million in funding per year
    • Excellent writing and editing skills
    • Excellent project management skills, including the ability to organize and prioritize large volumes of work
    • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, and ability and desire to work collaboratively with a diverse group
    • Demonstrated ability to receive feedback, actively listen, and consider multiple perspectives in order to deliver the best work product.
    • Strong computer skills, especially in Microsoft Office and Google Drive.
    • Experience with grant database management systems
    • Good judgment, common sense, and ability to work independently
    • Proficiency in English.
    • Flexibility to adapt as our organization and work changes
    • Educational requirements: We understand that there are a wide variety of paths towards the skills necessary for the position. As such, there are no formal educational requirements, as long as the applicant can demonstrate mastery of the desired skills. We do, however, value experience gained through educational programs, including credits completed in related subjects such as creative writing or political science.
