Deputy Chief of Police - Thunder Bay, Canada - Odgers Berndtson

    Default job background
    Description

Situated close to the U.S. border and to Manitoba, Thunder Bay is the largest community in Northwestern Ontario and serves as an important hub for First Nations communities in the region. With a large Indigenous community and a growing number of new Canadians, Thunder Bay is a diverse community. Like many communities in North America and particularly given the history of trauma for many in the community, Thunder Bay faces social issues of homelessness, mental health and substance use disorders. In responding to these and other challenges, the Thunder Bay Police Service has affirmed its commitment to make the changes needed to be an effective partner with the communities that it serves.

Under the leadership of the newly appointed chief, the Deputy Chief Administration will have a vital role to play in the transformation of the Service. This is a newly established position, created to ensure the resources, financial, technical, and human, are aligned with the mission and priorities of the Service. Specifically, you will be responsible and accountable for the overall management and direction of Finance, Human Resources, Training and Development, Technology and Systems Support – all of which will assist and support the Service in its commitment to building trust and confidence of the community.

In today's challenging environment, the Deputy must work closely with staff, uniform and civilian, as they deal with constantly changing work requirements and task complexity – by creating an environment of trust, openness and innovation. The Deputy Chief serves as a role model for behaviour that is consistent with the principles and values of a professional, ethical and inclusive police service. They must have the skills and confidence to be an effective, contributing member of the executive team and to provide visible leadership across the organization, enabling the Service to move forward with a clear sense of direction.

The successful candidate will bring to the position a respected and distinguished track record of senior level police experience at the confirmed rank of Inspector or above, combined with an understanding of modern corporate management. You have encouraged creative problem solving and led cultural change. You understand the value of trauma – informed practices and have excellent conflict resolution skills. You have earned respect through your consistent commitment to excellence and accountability. You have led strategic planning, human resources, relationship and change management, and have overseen budgeting and financial management. You have a post-secondary education or demonstrated equivalent of education and training. Above all, you bring a commitment to the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.

To fill this position, Thunder Bay Police Service has partnered with leadership advisory firm Odgers Berndtson. Applications are encouraged immediately, but not later than April 5th, 2024, and should be submitted online.

We thank all those who express an interest, however only those chosen for further development will be contacted.
