POSITION OVERVIEW:


The Technician I will facilitate and lead various lab-based and clinical research projects in the Obstetric Anesthesia Division with little supervision, as well as perform other research duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator or her designate.

The projects will mainly focus on clinical outcome measures on various patient interventions and translational laboratory studies. This will require coordination of different teams for different projects.

Some projects can be ambiguous in nature and will require some theoretical insight, interpretation of empirical data and the extraction of pertinent information from technical literature.

The incumbent will assist with the modification of procedures, as well as designing or creating new procedures/ technical approaches as necessary based on experimental results.

The Technician I will have to continuously facilitate the flow of work and act as a source of information for research activities on a regular basis.

Tact, good judgment, organizational skills and manual dexterity are essential for this position.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Laboratory work:


  • Responsible for organization of the laboratory and its daytoday operations (order supplies, maintain budgets, and assist with the development of new standard operating procedures)
  • Dissect the uterine/vascular samples and conduct muscle/blood vessel contractility experiments as per the designed protocol
  • Prepare various preciselymeasured drug solutions, maintain adequate circuit checkups of the organ bath system and pay strict attention to sterilization, cleaning and maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments/ equipment
  • Coordinate the muscle contraction data by creating and maintaining a database and analyzing the results. The validity of the research depends on the accuracy and care with which the results are collected. While great pains are taken to avoid errors, honest reporting is essential if there is any deviation from the protocol.

General:


  • Organize and maintain research documents and database of all project activities within the group in a structured manner. Coordinate and maintain all regulatory files and binders for research studies
  • Hold regular weekly meetings with the Principal Investigator and research study team to provide up to date status on research activities. Collaborate with the departmental fellows and investigators to assist with research needs and act as a resource for the department
  • Screen patients for study eligibility and obtain informed consent to participate in the study. Procure tissue samples. Liaise with study investigators, labor floor nurses, obstetricians and anesthesiologists during the study and ensure smooth flow of study
  • Participate in clinical and laboratory data collection for the study. Ensure research stats are completed regarding recruitment/screening for ongoing accountability. Data entry into excel and basic statistical analysis of the collected data

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited University
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience in a laboratory and clinical research environment
  • Must be versatile, flexible and selfmotivated
  • Experience with data management
  • Must possess exceptional communication skills (verbal, written and presentation) and be comfortable engaging and exchanging information with other members of the department
  • Demonstrated analytical and problemsolving abilities with strong attention to detail
  • Excellent leadership skills. Ability to work with a variety of individuals in a cooperative manner, both independently and as part of a team
  • Superior organizational and time management skills, professionalism, dependability
  • Demonstrated knowledge of good clinical practice guidelines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and expertise in database management and data analysis
