    Salary Range: SP3, Level 4, $88, $110,990.00 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

    Remediation & Contamination Specialist, Hydrogeologist – Hybrid

    The Opportunity

    The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is looking for a Remediation & Contamination Specialist to join our talented team of highly motivated professionals that contribute to protecting the environment and public safety in Alberta. As a Specialist you will be responsible for assessing and providing regulatory oversight on remediation and contamination management relating to oil and gas, in situ and pipeline activities in Alberta.     As the Specialist, you will play a critical role in conducting technical reviews of the various Record of Site Condition (RoSC) submissions to ensure compliance with Government of Alberta polices and legislation. You will collaborate closely with other environmental professionals and teams across the organization, assisting our field inspectors and subject matter experts on liability management topics and the various stakeholders in understanding of the regulatory requirements.

    What your day-to-day will look like:

    • Conduct technical reviews on monitoring reports, plans and results to ensure the licensee/person responsible is taking reasonable measures to address adverse effects and prevent further adverse effects related to oil and gas activities.
    • Ensure that remedial action plans and risk management plans are in place and carried out in the time specified along with any resulting compliance assurance activities.
    • Conduct technical RoSC audits and carry out any resulting compliance assurance activities.
    • Review groundwater monitoring programs for approved industrial facilities and provide recommendations for AER staff.

    What we're looking for in you:

    • Bachelor of Science in Geology, Environmental Earth Sciences, Engineering, or a related field, with a focus on Hydrogeology and/or soils and contaminant transport.
    • 4+ years of practical experience with applied science or regulatory experience as a specialist with applied science.
    • Applicants must hold membership in one or more of the following associations: the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (preferred), Alberta Institute of Agrologists, Alberta Society of Professional Biologists, Association of Science and Engineering. Technology Professionals of Alberta, and/or Association of the Chemical Profession of Alberta.
    • Strong organizational, time and project management skills to effectively balance multiple demands.
    • Ability to work with uncertainty using a multidisciplinary approach and identify areas of improvement with a solution mindset.
    • Build and demonstrate knowledge and technical skills.
    • Familiarity with Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA), Remediation Regulation and relevant policy documents.
