    The Children's Exercise and Nutrition Centre (CENC), a specialty clinic within the Pediatric Medicine and Surgery Clinics at McMaster Children's Hospital provides interdisciplinary clinical, research, and educational service for children and adolescents. Our clinical program involves consultation, education, and prescription of physical activity, nutrition, and lifestyle alterations to modify health-related behaviours of our clients, their families, and caregivers. We treat children with multiple diagnoses and coordinate an integrated and well-rounded program centering on the role that exercise and nutrition can play in a child's health and well-being. Our team implements individualized and group education programs based on the needs of each client and their family.

    Position Summary

    The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) will provide patient care in an ambulatory clinic, according to the professional standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario, functioning as an active member of the multidisciplinary health care team using a client centered approach. Our nursing activities include anthropometric measurements and rooming of youth 0 – 18 years of age, distribution and collection of clinic-related questionnaires and data, case management, participating in patient education initiatives, understanding and supporting clinic related research projects, performs other duties as assigned.

    Schedule Work Hours

    Monday to Friday; days. Evenings and weekends as needed.

    This position is temporary until December 2024.

    Qualifications
  • Current Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
  • Recent two (2) years' experience, within the last three years, in the care for children preferably in a tertiary care outpatient setting.
  • Excellent teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skill and ability in health teaching with pediatric patients and their families
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with children and their families under stressful conditions
  • Proficiency with computer applications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of motivational interviewing
  • Demonstrated skills in psychosocial assessment
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the approach to pediatric weight management, cardiometabolic health, and mental health comorbidities
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal skills
  • Ability to adapt to rapid change in patient condition workload status
  • Demonstrated ongoing professional development
