FAMILY SUPPORT WORKER 3

In Home Family Support

Full-Time, Permanent Position

Primarily Daytime Hours with Evening and Weekend availability

Wage:
$16.55- $21.01 per hour

Reporting to the Family Support Coordinator, the Family Support Worker III provides confidential in-home support to families where identified risk factors, illness or a disability are present, often in combination with the onset of a crisis, contributing to significant stress which interferes with healthy family functioning.

Parents and children may be overwhelmed by their circumstance and their ability to cope and communicate may be compromised.

The children may exhibit moderate to severe challenging or aggressive behaviours, due to the impact of adverse experiences and stress on their social, emotional, cognitive and physical development, or due to a developmental delay or diagnosis.

Family Support Workers are scheduled for regular, short-term placements, with multiple families and as needed for replacement/substitute placements.


Key Responsibilities and Activities

  • Complete tasks as outlined in the service agreement such as childcare (newborn to 12 years), light housekeeping, attending outings/appointments with families, mentoring parents to strengthen their skills, and connecting families to resources.
  • Provide childcare that promotes the physical, cognitive, social and emotional development of children. This includes the provision/facilitation of a variety of enriching activities both inside and outside of the home; the preparation of nutritious meals and snacks; feeding children; changing/dressing.
  • Respond and manage challenging behaviour of children in a developmentally appropriate and effective manner
  • Using role modelling, discussion, observation and reflection techniques, assist parents in the resolution of conflicts keeping self, children and others safe.
  • Guide parents in understanding and managing children's behaviours.
  • Communicate about client need and progress with Coordinators

Education and Experience

  • Completion of postsecondary certificate or diploma program in Child and Youth Care, Early Childhood Education, Community/Family Support Worker or other Human Services education.
  • A combination of relevant experience and training will be considered for applicants without a diploma/certificate
  • Current First Aid and CPR is required
  • Mental Health First Aid is required and preferably to be completed within 3 months of employment. on your own time.
  • Deescalating Potentially Violent Situations or Non-Violent Crisis Intervention is an asset
  • Minimum of five years' related experience working in the social services sector with children, youth and/or parents impacted by poverty, trauma, mental illness, intimate partner violence, child welfare involvement, addictions, disability, racism and colonization.
  • Experience working together with parents to build and strengthen parentchild relationships.
  • Experience identifying and reporting indicators of child abuse or a child in need of protection
  • Experience assisting parents to meet developmental needs of infants, toddlers, and children, and recognizing milestones.
  • Experience with household management like providing assistance with household duties and budgeting strategies.
  • Experience with meal preparation, and planning using available family resources.
  • Experience with documentation and reporting

  • Demonstration of cultural competency to work effectively and respectfully with people from different cultures and diverse backgrounds, including consideration of how social, historical contexts and imbalance of power have impacted people's experiences.
  • Ability to practice cultural humility; acknowledging oneself as a learner when understanding others personal experiences, as well as demonstrating a commitment to lifelong learning and selfreflection.
  • A strong knowledge of Attachment Theory and Child Development.
  • Ability to use and model positive parenting practices which improve parent's knowledge and child's developmental competence.
  • Ability to use positive, nonjudgemental, empathetic and strengthbased approach with all families.
  • Knowledge and ability to use deescalation techniques, conflict resolution and crisis management
  • Ability to maintain highly sensitive and confidential information of clients and families.
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize job duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English verbally (Benchmark Level 7), to read, listen and write.
  • Ability to use web browser apps, Google/Gmail, and Zoom app on computers and cell phones.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (22 kilograms) is required.
