DESCRIPTION


The RPN- OH provides specific, routine occupational health services to KHSC staff that are focused on primary prevention (health promotion and illness/injury prevention) and secondary prevention (illness/injury treatment/stay at work/return to work).

Note

  • Tertiary Prevention interventions would be a responsibility of an RN or RTW Specialist)
The RPN will routinely be responsible for any of the following:

  • Assessing and providing first aid for minor workplace injuries, setting up modified work as needed;
  • Conducting preplacement health assessments for all new staff to ensure they have all required immunizations (as per the OMA/OHA Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols) and are functionally fit to perform the demands of their job;
  • Administering required vaccinations and conducting Tb skin tests
  • Performing phlebotomy (collecting bloodwork) to verify immunity or as part of the established post exposure/needlestick injury protocol
  • Promoting and providing influenza vaccinations as part of the annual staff influenza vaccination campaign
  • Other testing as directed by RN within medical directives ( drug screening, glucometer)
  • Reviewing immunization records to determine gaps and follows up with employees to communicate these needs and/or provide the necessary vaccinations
  • Provides health teaching; provides information/refers to available KHSC and/or community resources to address a staff member's health need or need for assistance
  • Ordering supplies/vaccines to ensure quotas are maintained
  • Promoting employee health and wellness through the organization and delivery of services (e.g. BP clinics, creating display boards, creating content for wellness website, wellness newsletter)
  • Other administrative duties as assigned (e.g. scanning, filing, MSDS database management)
In the case of outbreaks in clinical areas or unprotected staff exposures to infectious illness (e.g. patient determined to be positive for Tuberculosis), the RPN will received direction from the RN in terms of follow up with staff that is necessary. This could include for example, contacting employees to determine if they meet the exposure criteria as per the specific OMA/OHA communicable Disease surveillance Protocol, administering necessary testing (e.g. baseline or follow up Tb skin test).

May occasionally be required to provide respiratory fit testing services.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES & DUTIES:


  • Performs assessments, reviews documentation/immunization records, and obtains information via staff interview for the purpose of:
  • Determining fitness to work (e.g. as part of pre-placement health assessment for new hires, or for staff with presenting with potentially infectious symptoms)
  • Determining need for additional treatment with possible referral to RN or off to their physician/ED;
Providing first aid after minor workplace injuries and consulting on minor health issues

  • Management of potentially infectious workplace exposures (e.g. post needlestick injury bloodwork on an employee, Tb exposure, Influenza outbreak) with direction from the RN as needed
  • Administers vaccinations, Tb skin tests, influenza vaccinations as per established protocols, and performs phlebotomy to confirm immunity
  • Provides health teaching, provides support and information/refers to available KHSC and/or community resources to address a staff member's health need or need for assistance, and promotes wellness through organization and delivery of wellness activities/services (e.g. content prep for wellness newsletter, organizing lunch & learns with speakers, BP screening clinics, creating display boards, etc.)
  • Administrative: charting, ordering supplies/immunizations, filing, scanning, provides assistance with respiratory fit testing as needed

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Minimum Practical Nurse diploma ( 2 years program) or equivalent
  • Minimum Practical Nurse diploma ( 2 years program) preferred
  • 23 years as an RPN within the Occupational Health Field
  • 35 years as an RPN within the Occupational Health Field preferred
  • Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Training in Occupational Health and Safety or Disability Management preferred
  • Ability to prioritize tasks for self and others.
  • Proven ability to attend work regularly
  • Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.
