    Overall Accountability

    The Capital Accountant is responsible for the accounting and reporting on all capital projects undertaken by Calgary Catholic. The reporting includes all reporting to Alberta Education. Additional responsibilities include managing the Asset Management and General Ledger software modules related to capital projects and assets and budgeting, financial analysis, accounting, monitoring and reporting on expenditures relative to the assigned portfolio.

    Specific Accountabilities

    • Develops and implements processes to meet the changing requirements for capital reporting and monthly operational reporting originating either internally or externally (i.e. Alberta Education)
    • Determines and reports monthly capital cash flow projections to Alberta Education which is relied upon by Alberta Treasury for Alberta Government cash flow
    • Responsible for timely and accurate completion of requests for payment to Alberta Education for capital expenditures. This is a new requirement necessitated in a change to how capital projects are funded
    • Responsible for all aspects of financial accounting and monitoring of capital projects in Calgary Catholic; includes accuracy and completeness of expenditures and revenues, capitalization decisions, monitoring to budget, financial statement note disclosure and all Alberta Education financial reporting (including final cost submissions) related to these projects
    • Interprets financial results and providing ad hoc financial analysis to the Facilities department for decision making purposes
    • Liaises with the Government of Alberta regarding capital funding and expenditures; liaises with external auditors regarding capital expenditures
    • Manages the Asset Management, General Ledger software modules for capital projects for the PeopleSoft Financial System and its interface with Maximo; involves troubleshooting system issues, ensuring integrity of the interfaces and implementing changes due to changing requirements
    • Prepares salary and benefit budgets for custodial staff
    • Assists Construction and Maintenance in the preparation of budgets and monitoring expenditures
    • Prepares quarterly financial projections (revenue, expenditure and capital) and variance analysis for Construction and Maintenance and all capital projects and related expenditures for inclusion quarterly projections for the Board of Trustees
    • Prepares and analyzes information for monthly and annual financial reporting, including financial statement note disclosure related to all Construction and Maintenance
    • Coordinates periodic inventory counts of furniture, equipment and vehicles to fulfill the asset stewardship function

    Qualifications

    • Degree in accounting
    • Three to five years related
    • Experience with integrated financial systems, preferably PeopleSoft Financials
    • Chartered Professional Accountant designation
    • Excellent organization, communication and interpersonal skills
    • Superior analytical and problem solving skills
    • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel
    • Knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards
