    Description

    Driven by our desire to help students thrive in their academic and personal lives, the Saanich School District provides quality educational programs and a safe and nurturing learning environment for the over 7,000 culturally diverse students within its 18 schools.

    Serving the Saanich Peninsula located just north of Victoria, BC, the district has one of the highest graduation rates in the province and a student body that consistently scores well on annual assessment tests, thanks in large part to the dedication and efforts of our 900 teaching and support staff.

    Indigenous Support Teacher K-5

    Applicants must have training and/or experience in early learning and have experience as an elementary classroom teacher.

    Candidates will have a strong understanding of Indigenous pedagogy, Indigenous histories and cultures, and be able to demonstrate expertise in embedding Indigenous content in a wide range of instructional strategies inclusive of early learning and elementary literacy to support Indigenous Learner success.

    Applicants will work closely with classroom teachers and the Indigenous Education Team to support Indigenous early learners develop their reading and writing skills and strategies.

    Applicants must also be prepared to use technology (e.g. computers, Teams, e-mail, websites, MyEducation BC etc.) for planning, communication, instruction and reporting purposes; and be prepared to support the Equity in Action Agreement and the District Enhancement Agreement goals. Applicants must be prepared to work with educators and participate/plan in the support of Indigenous initiatives throughout District schools.
    A valid BC Teaching Certificate
    Commitment to support the full range of student abilities
    Successful experience with adapting and modifying materials for a diversity of learners
    Working knowledge of using computing technology to support learning
    A commitment to the Principles of Inclusive Schools and Principles of Learning
    Bachelor of Education (Elementary)
    Knowledge of local Saanich Indigenous Communities
    Significant leadership experience, preferably in relation to developing and enhancing Indigenous community and cultural awareness
    Demonstrated successful experience acting as a role model for and working with Indigenous students supporting them in literacy, numeracy and the development of learning and life skills
    Demonstrated proficiency in developing connections and partnerships with Indigenous Communities and raising cultural awareness in school
    Effective communication skills, demonstrated through positive relationships with students, staff, parents/guardians and the community
    Strong administrative skills to manage the ongoing documentation processing requirements associated with the Indigenous Support Program

    have a minimum of 2 years classroom teaching experience from Kindergarten to Grade 5;
    have literacy intervention training, skills and experience at the primary level
    ability to demonstrate strong leadership in all areas of Indigenous Education;
    SÁNE? culture, local protocols, and current issues of concern to persons of Indigenous ancestry, including members of the W?readiness to work as a member of the Indigenous Education team including working with Elementary classroom teachers, Indigenous Support Staff, District Teacher Leaders, District Staff and Committees;
    have training/experience and be willing to use Quality Assessment practices
