Position Overview


We are offering an exciting opportunity to work as a specialist system designer within the Security and Architecture Directorate at the University of Calgary.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to work in a diverse and dynamic environment and help develop systems that will help support Research, Teaching and Learning and Administration at the University.

This limited term position will be for one year, with a chance of extension. The position reports to the Lead - System Design


Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Work with Project Managers, and representatives from various faculties/departments on campus to understand business requirements
  • In conjunction with the Project Manager, develop a list of resources required to deliver the technical design
  • In conjunction with the Project Manager, negotiate with functional managers across IT to obtain access to any additional technical resources required
  • Work with Project Managers, and representatives from various faculties/departments on campus to understand business requirements

  • Assume ownership of the service design process from conception through release to production
  • Assemble and act as team lead for the design team, delegate design tasks, and track the design through to completion
  • Ensure all system designs are aligned with the IT's architectural standards and roadmaps
  • Ensure all system designs are delivered in a timely manner, based upon the Project Manager's schedule
  • Working in conjunction with IT Architecture, develop longterm strategic directions for IT's technical solutions and design offerings
  • Responsible for ensuring all documentation is detailed, accurate, timely, and meets the requirements of the project stakeholders.
These documents may include, but are not limited to:


  • Consolidated design, showing both logical and physical layout
  • System build request(s)
  • Release documentation
  • Support documentation, FAQs, known issues, errors
  • Requests for Change

Qualifications / Requirements:


  • University degree or professional certification such as MCSA/MCSE, CCNA,VCDX, or RHCE required
  • Minimum of five years of recent related experience equivalent to the above
  • Working knowledge of operating system technologies including Windows, Linux, ESX
  • Working knowledge of network technologies such as DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, routing, firewalls
  • Ability to raise, facilitate, and resolve business and technical issues
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, in both oral and written form
  • Capable of working on concurrent projects and managing conflicting priorities
  • Ability to translate technical jargon into businessfriendly language
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Visio and suite of Microsoft Office products
  • ITIL v3 Foundations certification is an asset
