    About the Role

    OPTrust is looking for an exceptional transactional lawyer to join our Toronto-based Legal Services team.

    In this position you will be working closely with the investment teams supporting and advising on a wide range of domestic and international transactional and corporate matters. A motivated self-starter with a partnering focused mindset, you will find yourself exposed to a broad range of investment transactions across a continually evolving strategic landscape, including private equity and infrastructure, real estate, private funds, capital markets, and fixed income investments.

    In this highly collaborative role, you will be directly advising the deal teams in OPTrust's investment division in Toronto, providing pro-active solution-based legal and risk management advice in support of our global investment mandate.

    What You'll Do

  • Support and advise the investment teams with sound counsel across a variety of transactional matters
  • Participate as an active partner with business units across the organization, using the opportunity to guide and support decision making and mitigate risk
  • Work directly with internal Tax, Compliance, Investment Finance, Communications, and others to provide pro-active and creative legal, business, asset management and investment solutions
  • Advise on committee matters and support the development of internal investment, trading, finance, and risk management policies
  • Provide corporate governance and regulatory compliance advice
  • Plan, supervise and execute on a variety of complex legal initiatives and innovative projects
  • Work with and manage external counsel

    • What You Bring

  • LLB/JD
  • 10+ years of experience in private equity and/or mergers & acquisitions, securities, corporate finance, investment funds, or transactional real estate at a top-tier law firm or in-house legal department
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, adaptable and flexible
  • Enjoys working collaboratively with many different partners
  • Client-oriented approach including a demonstrated ability to build trust with clients
  • Demonstrated legal and business judgment
  • Willingness to engage in different types of advisory opportunities and adapt to and learn a broad set of transaction types
  • Highly inquisitive and quick to understand complex issues
  • Proven organizational and analytical skills with the ability to project manage critical work to completion
  • Ability to manage several files at the same time while maintaining high standard of client service
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and look for opportunities to add value
