    About Us

The Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing (DMAH) is dedicated to working with municipalities to build healthy, vibrant, and safe communities throughout Nova Scotia. Municipal Affairs provides programs, grants, and funding opportunities for municipalities and community groups. The Department also provides services and guidance to municipalities in many areas including land use planning, budget planning and finance, infrastructure development, policy and program development.

    About Our Opportunity

As the Municipal Flood Line Mapping (MFLM) Program Student, you'll be part of an exciting, transformative project; helping support the administration and implementation of a multi-million-dollar initiative led by the Department of Municipal Affairs & Housing (DMAH) and the Department of Environment & Climate Change (ECC), with support from the federal Ministry of Natural Resources Canada.

This program aims to conduct comprehensive flood hazard mapping for all of Nova Scotia's watersheds and coastline, directly influencing the application of crucial policies such as the Municipal Government Act and other climate-related regulations.

You will work closely with the Assistant Provincial Director of Planning and support the MFLM Program Manager (Senior Planner), monitoring project progress, building stakeholder relationships, and ensuring strategic objectives are met.

    Primary Accountabilities

You will work collaboratively to coordinate a diverse range of research, knowledge-building activities, and data-collection efforts essential for high-quality flood mapping. You will also:

    • Assist the Program Manager/Senior Planner in updating the Municipal Flood Line Mapping Document, ensuring it reflects a science-based approach to developing flood line maps consistently and effectively across Nova Scotia.
    • Be involved with regular program/project review meetings.
    • Assist in procurement activities such as drafting Request for Proposals (RFPs), Statements of Work (SoWs), contract development, vendor selection, and negotiations
    • Support the alignment of deliverables with other initiatives outside the program by following best practice frameworks and processes.
    • Have an important role in building partnerships and collaborative relationships across government and various sectors.
    • Ensure effective communication of project scope, objectives, and progress
    Qualifications and Experience

You should have a genuine interest in exploring practical experience and mentorship in the fields of planning, housing, and government. This role provides an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking to further their understanding and expertise in these areas while contributing to meaningful projects that shape the future of communities.

You must be currently enrolled in a graduate program in land use planning (or similar) with at least one year remaining until completion.

    You demonstrate the following:

    • Strong communication skills and ability to effectively analyze, convey, and present complex ideas.
    • Well-developed knowledge of planning principles and practices, with the ability to integrate cross-functional knowledge from other relevant disciplines.
    • An understanding of the legislative framework governing land use planning laws and can interpret and draft by-laws effectively within this framework.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

    Working Conditions

Your hours of work will typically be 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday to Friday. As a valued member of our team at the Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing, you'll collaborate with dedicated staff within our office environment. While most tasks are conducted in-office, there may be exciting opportunities for on-site visits to municipalities. Additionally, we offer flexibility, allowing for up to two days of remote work per week, providing a balanced and adaptable work experience.

    Additional Information

This is a summer student opportunity, with an anticipated end date of August 31, 2024.

    What We Offer
    • Your work will directly impact the lives of people in communities across Nova Scotia.
    • You will gain new experience and develop valuable skills and knowledge.
    • You'll connect with experienced professionals who share a passion for change.
