Head of Research, RBC Climate

Job Summary
RBC is launching a climate and sustainability research institute, to help inform and inspire Canada's journey to net zero.

This new thought leadership initiative will draw on economics research, data tracking, policy analysis and client interaction to deliver insights, and convene groups, designed to advance transition pathways and foster ideas and innovation.

We are looking for a dynamic and diligent leader to shape the research agenda and be an additional voice in Canada's climate dialogue.

This new position will report to the SVP, Office of the CEO, and oversee a small team of climate and policy researchers, and work collaboratively with our publication and communications team, client-facing business groups and the RBC climate network.


What's in it for you?


This new initiative will work closely with RBC Economics and Thought Leadership, as well as the Climate Strategy & Governance group and other parts of the enterprise to inform and inspire private and public action, as well as RBC's climate strategy.

This role will help RBC align commitments and targets with economy wide performance and progress, share best practices and thought leadership, and engage with key policy, industry and community leaders.


Must haves

  • Vision, to work closely with the leadership team, to ensure our research aligns with our climate strategy;
  • Collaboration, to work actively with the production and distribution teams, along with clientfacing groups, to maximize the impact of our research;
  • An analytical and strategic mindset, along with bigpicture thinking, to connect and synthesize large amounts of information;
  • Proven communications abilities, to ensure our research is reaching the right groups and audiences in the most effective way;
  • Familiarity with key climate and sustainability policies, applied research, national and global climate landscape, climate regulatory environment, reporting frameworks and external benchmarks
  • Experience in various research methodologies, along with a blend of public policy and consulting style research
  • 10+ years of experience in policy research, economics, consulting, strategy, professional and/or financial services sectors; experience in climate/ sustainability roles a benefit
  • Building connectivity across the enterprise on key climate topics, generating collaboration and achieving greater impact for the organization
  • Act as a playercoach to a small group of economists and policy researchers

Nice to haves

  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication, relationship building and storytelling skills (written and verbal) to interact across all levels of the organization and external sectors with impact and influence, acting as a climate ambassador across the organization
  • Demonstrated passion and interest in driving environmental and social change within and beyond the enterprise
  • Lead research projects exploring the costs, benefits and progress of sector pathways, with particular focus on energy, agriculture and building
  • Develop collaborative research projects with think tanks, sector groups and policy bodies
  • Serve as a knowledge expert to clients, industry bodies, environmental groups and governments
  • Bilingual English/French would be an asset

  • Responsible for developing, integrating and pressure testing strategies related to climate, and support on the overarching climate and executive updates
