- Perform grossing of fixed tissues and cutting of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue samples.
- Perform histology procedures with non-human tissue samples, particularly adult and embryonic mice.
- Perform appropriate mouse handling, anesthesia, necropsies, blood collection, specific organ dissection, prepare blood and bone marrow smears.
- Maintain all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for lab operations.
- Maintain a Quality Control system for histology equipment and troubleshoot any issues that might arise.
- Listen to and be responsive to individual clients' service requirements by providing technical advice on histology services and solutions tailored to each project.
- Provide general interpretation of histology stains and educate clients on the results.
- Independently pursue assay and SOP development.
- Be responsible for accessioning service requests and data entry into the Pathology Core's Laboratory Information Management System.
- A BSc or equivalent training and experience in the life sciences.
- Five years of experience with gross pathology and histology procedures: organ dissection, paraffin processing and embedding, microtomy, routine and special histology stains.
- Demonstrated knowledge of embryonic and adult mouse anatomy and histology.
- A results-driven team member with a proven ability to apply sound decision-making principles, maintain a high level of organization, accuracy, and attention to detail with an ability to document work.
- A self-starter with proven ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
- Ability to meet deadlines and adapt to changes in schedules and priorities.
- Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload.
- Able to understand written and verbal directions in English.
- Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn new techniques, solve technical problems, troubleshoot, and optimize standard protocols.
- Exceptional English verbal and written communication skills.
- Computer and database entry skills.
- Experience with clinical biochemistry is an asset.
- MLA/T certification by the Ontario Society of Medical Technologists.
- Maintain personal certifications as required by Safety Office
- Maintain the lab's Safety requirements as required by Safety Office
- Maintain current lab-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) - including work with hazardous chemicals and biological agents, hazardous waste disposal, etc.

Description
POSITION OVERVIEW
:The Technician III will independently perform tissue processing and embedding, microtomy, routine and special staining, mouse necropsies and organ dissection, preparation and staining of blood and bone marrow smears. The Technician III will provide expert consultation and training to academic and industry clients when required.
Other duties, including accessioning of service requests, grossing of histology samples, cryo-microtomy, blood and urine biochemistry analysis, slide scanning, and contributions to maintaining laboratory readiness may also be required, and appropriate cross-training will be provided. The Technician III must adhere to all documentation, regulations, protocols, and procedures of TCP's Pathology Core and the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute.

In accordance with Institute's policy and legislated health and safety requirements, employment is conditional upon the verification of credentials, completion of a health review, and demonstrating proof of immunity and vaccination status of vaccine-preventable diseases. Successful candidates will be required to provide two (2) written reference letters from their former employer(s)/supervisor(s).
A recent Provincial Directive mandates all employees of public hospitals in Ontario to be either fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or be regularly tested. All new employees joining Sinai Health must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and be on track toward full vaccination within six (6) weeks; participating in mandatory twice weekly Rapid Antigen Testing Program until fully vaccinated. There are very limited circumstances in which approval will be given for a medical exemption from receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
