- Provide leadership in the development and on-going review of specific program policy, strategies and initiatives in partnership with internal and external stakeholders to enhance pharmaceutical programs available for Albertans. Develop options for strategic directions and responses to health care issues, specifically pharmaceutical issues, to sustain required health care programs. Provide project management support to multi-stakeholder or ministry-wide initiatives. Collect, synthesize, and analyze pharmaceutical information and trends to ensure alignment of policies and programs to reflect government direction. Assess options and implications that result in changes to existing services and programs through analysis of possible strategies and approaches; identify associated risks and be able to provide strategies to mitigate those risks. Provide support and advice to the Minister, Deputy Minister, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Assistant Deputy Minister, Executive Director and/or Director in the development of Alberta's position on new pharmaceutical issues of strategic importance.
- Support the Director in achieving Unit and Branch business goals. Keep abreast of current and emerging pharmacy practice issues, best practice strategies, and developments in drugs/technology. Maintain a high standard of professional competence from experience and the on-going acquisition of information and skills. Promote co-coordinated interdivisional approaches in response to emerging issues. Provide pharmaceutical policy perspectives to support the implementation of integrated information systems, support research and improve clinical and management decision making.
- Provide a liaison for Alberta Health and the Minister by establishing relationships with other governments, industry, professional associations, and the medical and academic research community. Lead and manage consultation projects to support multi-stakeholder or ministry-wide initiatives. Provide policy support to ministry-wide and cross-ministry initiatives. Establish and maintain positive working relationships with key stakeholders and in particular senior officials from other jurisdictions. Collaborate with other provincial and territorial jurisdictions to put national pharmaceutical strategies in place to enhance the comprehensiveness, efficiency and effectiveness of publicly funded drug programs. Represent Alberta Health in provincial and national forums with respect to pharmaceutical matters. Participate in negotiations with other jurisdictions to ensure support for Alberta's positions.

As partners in providing all Albertans with access to effective and affordable drug benefit coverage and pharmacy services, the Pharmaceuticals and Supplementary Health Benefits provides leadership in the development and implementations of initiatives for Alberta's publicly funded drug programs.
The Pharmaceutical Strategy & Foresight Unit leads the identification of, and develops appropriate responses to, key trends and shifts that may affect the effective and efficient operations of publicly funded drug programs. The unit develops and advances strategic priorities related to the provision of health benefits, collaborates with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, and is responsible for integration of Alberta's publicly funded drug programs with other parts of the health system to support positive collaboration and efficient use of resources. The unit is also responsible for the forecast and budget activities of the Pharmaceutical and Health Benefit Branch.
Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Pharmaceutical Strategy & Foresight, the Manager, Pharmacy Services manages critical issues, assesses economic risk/benefits, develops sound solutions, and provides advice related to pharmaceuticals and pharmacy policies in the context of Alberta's health system. The Manager, Pharmacy Services assists with the management and evaluation of drug plan designs, research projects and pharmaceutical agreement, enabling access to appropriate and effective drug therapies for Albertans. The Manager, Pharmacy Services supports critical improvements in drug program design and directions in an effort to enable appropriate patient care and effective resource use considering future system implications. The Manager, Pharmacy Services will be working with internal and external stakeholders as a liaison to provide policy consistency and program support.
