Department Chair, Electrical and Computer Engineering - Edmonton, AB, Canada - University of Alberta
Description
Department: Faculty of Engineering - Electrical & Computer Engineering Dept Posted date: March 27, 2024 Closing date: Will remain open until filled. Position Type: Full Time Description Closing Date: Review of applications will be scheduled to begin on April 22nd, 2024, and will continue until a successful candidate is identified. Term: 5 Years The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta helps students develop the skills they need to dream of and invent the technology of the future. ECE is a leader in Electrical and Computer Engineering education in Canada, offering both undergraduate (traditional and co-op) and graduate programs such as B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Engineering Physics, and M.Eng., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering. As we look to continuously build upon our record of scholarship, teaching, and service, we are seeking a Department Chair to join our team for a five-year term, with the possibility of renewal, in conjunction with a tenured appointment at the rank of Professor. Our people work to improve engineering technologies in Energy and Control Systems, Communications, Solid-State Electronics and Integrated Circuits, Electromagnetics and Microwaves, Photonics and Plasmas, Computer Engineering and Intelligent Systems, and Biomedical Engineering among others. We have more than 60 faculty members including 8 IEEE Fellows and 4 Canada Research Chairs with interdisciplinary work across engineering, the University, and industry. We celebrate creativity, diversity, perseverance, and a collaborative spirit, and recognize the importance of academic excellence in conjunction with work/life balance, interdisciplinary research, and mentorship. The ECE Department has over 1,000 undergraduate students with a variety of opportunities to engage with them outside the classroom in research laboratory work, capstone projects, and student teams, like the DivE Club and award-winning Autonomous Robotic Vehicle Project. Recently constructed student-focused spaces include the Elko Engineering Garage and the Innovation, Creativity, Entrepreneurship Engineering Incubator. We are also in the latter stage of developing a new Mechatronics Bachelor's Degree Program. The Department's graduate program attracts students from around the world, who are dedicated to developing their expertise. It presently has an enrollment of 450 graduate students, including 220 Ph.D. students. More information is available at OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE In the Faculty of Engineering, Department Chairs oversee their department's operations as the administrative head of an academic department (more information here). We are seeking candidates with experience in university teaching, research, and administration. They will participate as a member of teams and committees with other University administrators and staff at the department, faculty, and college levels. In line with the Faculty of Engineering's strategic priorities, the successful candidate will oversee the Department in modernizing undergraduate and graduate programs with industry-relevant curricula; fostering a positive, inclusive, and safe culture for faculty, students, and staff; and supporting research effectiveness, interdisciplinary research, and mentorship of trainees and new faculty members. They will advance the University's priority of creating an inclusive and equitable environment that seeks to learn the needs of and value the contributions of all members of the campus community. A Department Chair: Strategically positions the Department for success
