ABOUT THE ROLE


The purpose of this role is to facilitate the development of the Indigenous Engagement Strategy at Bissell Centre and lead the implementation of its key priority initiatives.

Advancing Bissell Centre's ability to acknowledge, initiate and embrace Indigenous engagement, practices and protocol within the organization, this role will provide both direct and indirect supports/direction to participants and staff to learn, acknowledge, support a greater connection to Indigenous culture, language, and world view through 1-on-1 conversations, group workshops, drop-in workshops, sharing circles, regular practice of Indigenous ceremony, liaison with our Indigenous partners, teachers and Elders, and staff training.

This position will recommend, develop and deliver program processes and procedures along with consultation with the Director of Indigenous Engagement to include and implement Indigenous world view in all of Bissell Centres service delivery.


The Indigenous Engagement Coordinator will ensure participants have the support they need to fully engage with their Indigeneity or explore aspects of Indigenous culture that will be helpful to their successes.

The Indigenous Engagement Coordinator will work with all levels of participant facing programs that request or require Indigenous supports.

They will work with staff to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants and act as a liaison for staff teachings and trainings.





NOTE:
This is a full-time, 2-year contract role.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the development of priority initiatives for Bissell's Indigenous Engagement Strategy across the organization, acting as the key liaison with various departments.
  • Coordinate all requests for internal requests for Indigenous support.
  • In consultation with the Director of Indigenous Engagement, develop a holistic counselling process that empowers participants, reflects Indigenous world view, and provides participants with the tools and skills they need to better engage with Indigenous culture.
  • Seek, examine, relationship build and propose partnerships, and or opportunities to establish new opportunities to advance Bissell Centre's Indigenous Engagement process, mission and values.
  • Work with program managers for the introduction, enhancement and delivery of employee training, and development of programs specific to Indigenous Engagement.
  • Provide guidance and assistance in the introduction, implementation and maintenance of Indigenous Engagement.
  • Promote cultural development workshops internally and externally.
  • Engage participants in intentional and purposeful conversations.
  • Compile data, statistics, funding requests, metrics and other information required for departmental KPI's specific to Indigenous engagement.
  • As needed provide updates, communications, ceremonies etc. regarding Indigenous Engagement.
  • Refer participants to suitable support services as needed.
  • Follow a harm reduction model of care.
  • Other duties as required.

Facilitating Group Workshops

  • In consultation with the Director of Indigenous Engagement and Employment Services, develop a series of Indigenous cultural workshops that can be delivered to groups of participants.
  • Develop opportunities and support an environment where participants can build support networks, build relationships with peers, elders and Knowledge Keepers.
  • Use deescalation skills and provide crisis intervention as required.
  • Maintain a database of current and relevant cultural support services and resources.
  • Enter detailed and accurate client data into appropriate databases.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • A Diploma or Degree in Native Studies (or equivalent) or other related field and a minimum of 2 years' experience in a similar role. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
