    The Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a tenure-track teaching position in the area of technology.

    Position title: Assistant Professor and Director of the Samuelson-Glushko Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC).

    Area of expertise and responsibilities: This unique position combines academic expertise in law and technology with the practical skill set to advance the public interest in cutting edge technology law and policy issues as director of the Samuelson-Glushko Canadian Internet and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC).

    The position features reduced teaching responsibilities and the opportunity to contribute original scholarly research. As director of the Samuelson-Glushko clinic, Canada's first and only public interest technology law clinic, you will play a crucial role. Responsibilities include managing and administering the clinic, involving priority setting as well as co-ordination and management of activities such as policy-making, public interest advocacy, public education and law student training.

    The director is also responsible for CIPPIC fundraising and promotion, including communication and social media outreach. As director, you will supervise two staff lawyers, as well as fellows, students and volunteers, and will report to a Board of Directors consisting of professors and external experts.

    Terms: This tenure-track position is in either the French Common Law Program, the English Common Law Program or both. Please note at the top of your cover letter whether you are applying for the English or the French program, or for both. The anticipated start date is August 1, 2024.

    Academic duties: The functions of a member of the academic staff include, in varying proportions:

  • teaching
  • scholarly activities such as research, artistic or literary creation, or professional work
  • academic service
  • graduate student supervision
  • Salary and benefits : The salary range for the rank of Assistant professor is $94,588 - $130,821 as per the salary scale in effect on May 1, 2023. Salaries are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

    The University of Ottawa offers a comprehensive, generous compensation package that includes long-term disability benefits, basic group life insurance, supplemental health insurance, a defined benefit pension plan, optional life insurance and reimbursement of eligible moving expenses. The faculty also offers a reduced teaching load and seed money for research in the first year of hiring.

    Skill requirements: This position requires clinical, policy or litigation experience in law and technology . In addition, you must hold a degree in common law. The University of Ottawa requires that appointees have completed or be on the verge of completing either a master's or doctoral degree in law or a doctoral degree in a related discipline.

    Should you currently be enrolled in an LLM program, you must receive the degree within six months of appointment. Should you currently be enrolled in a doctoral program, your supervisor must confirm that there is a reasonable likelihood that your dissertation will be submitted prior to appointment.

    Strong communication skills. Passive knowledge of the other official language in Canada is a requirement for tenure.
