    Course Information

    This course provides the foundations of functional, business, and corporate strategy for management critical in the operations and growth of organizations in the AECO (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry. With rapid shifts in social policies, economic models, environmental regulations, and technological developments, strategic leadership is essential in success in the AECO industry. This course promotes the development of leaders in the dynamic AECO industry through in-depth analyses of strategic decision-making models applied and reinforced with case-based exercises. Covering topics from leadership in vision-casting and determination of mission goals through to systems management and organizational structures, this course focuses upon developing knowledge essential in leadership over a range of stakeholders within the AECO industry.

    Complementing the strategic management curriculum are tactical workshops providing the framework for soft skills development in topics including recruiting, presentation, negotiation, and networking critical in implementation of strategic initiatives.

    Hours/Section: 3 hours

    Estimated Number of Students: 25 students

    a) A part-time hourly appointment/ one semester is for less than 9 hours in any one semester.

    PLEASE NOTE: Pursuant to the University's and as a condition of employment, all successful candidates will be required to either submit valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or receive a . Course delivery in Fall 2024/Winter 2025 will be online, in-person or hybrid at the sole discretion of the hiring unit. Candidates hired for in-person courses will be required to carry out their teaching on campus. Candidates teaching remotely are required to have access to the appropriate technology, i.e. computer with camera and microphone and high-speed internet.

    Education

    The Applicant must possess an accredited degree in Business (MBA or equivalent) or Architecture (B.Arch., M.Arch. or equivalent) or Engineering (B.A.Sc or M.A.Sc); applicants with degrees in other areas related to the planning and construction of the built environment may be considered.

    Practice Field Experience

    Applicants must have a minimum of at least ten (10) years field experience in project management in active practice, with at least five (5) years experience in a senior leadership role (Senior Project Manager/Director/Associate Principal or above) in built projects. Applicants with experience leading projects delivered using a variety of methods, including traditional (e.g. CCDC), Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), and/or Alternative Financing and Procurement (e.g. Design-Build-Finance-Maintain) projects in Ontario.

    Currency

    Applicants must demonstrate current understanding of the architectural field and the particular issues related to this course through professional practice, publications, and/or participation in relevant conferences (within the past five years).

    Current DAS CUPE 1 Lecturers are expected to provide an updated currency report to be considered for contract lecturer positions as per article 17.(h) of the collective agreement.

    Teaching Skills

    Applicants must have demonstrated post-secondary teaching experience or equivalent industry training experience related to techniques that are commonly used in the leadership and management of firms.

    Applicants should demonstrate commitment to inclusive teaching and awareness of EDI priorities, including but not limited to demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and incorporating course materials and/or guest lecturers to provide different knowledge, perspectives, lived experiences and worldviews.

    Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of personal computers that are relevant to this course, including document creation, file management, internet research, and communications.

    Interactive Skills

    This course is intended to be highly experiential, drawing from cases and in-class simulation and active discussion to promote the development of critical thinking skills with respect to developing strategy and managing the activities of an AEC firm. This requires the instructor to lead role-play activities and draw from active practice experience to provide context for decision-making, conflict resolution, etc.

    Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with colleagues and students; ability to work effectively in groups; ability to resolve conflicts constructively; ability to carry out the duties and obligations of an Instructor in a respectful manner; ability to empathize with others and consider varied perspectives; commitment to on-going self-assessment; effectively facilitate respectful classroom discussions addressing diverse student identities, perspectives and experiences.

    Other Requirements

    Applicants are to submit samples of teaching work and/or design/creative/professional work or other documents that demonstrate work they have undertaken in the proposed area of focus.
