    Course Information

    This course covers the basics of lighting and acoustic design in buildings. It explores human reactions to light and sound, using simple calculations to assess acoustic and lighting performance in spaces. The curriculum also delves into natural lighting processes and energy management techniques, along with the fundamentals of acoustic separation. Students will analyze case studies of various room types, such as interior office spaces, public galleries, and performance venues, to evaluate sound and light applications. The course will introduce model testing of room acoustic performance and lighting.

    Course: ASC 521: Light and Sound in Architecture

    Semester/Term: Winter 2025

    Hours/Section: 3 hours

    Estimated Number of Students: 120 students

    1. a) A part-time hourly appointment/ one semester is for less than 9 hours in any one semester.

    PLEASE NOTE: As a condition of employment, successful candidates must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or receive the necessary vaccination. Course delivery in Fall 2024/Winter 2025 may be online, in-person, or hybrid based on the hiring unit's discretion. In-person instructors will be required to teach on campus, while remote instructors must have the essential technology, such as a computer with camera and microphone, and high-speed internet access.

    Qualifications

    Education

    Applicants should hold an accredited degree in Architecture (B.Arch., M.Arch. or equivalent).

    Those with advanced degrees in architecture, building science, management, or related fields may receive preference.

    Experience

    Applicants must have proven experience in architectural design, especially in addressing complex lighting and acoustics challenges.

    A history of relevant research and publications in acoustic and/or lighting design is advantageous.

    Currency

    Applicants must display current knowledge of the architectural field and specific subjects related to this course through professional activities, publications, or participation in relevant conferences over the past five years.

    Current DAS CUPE 1 Lecturers must offer an updated currency report to be eligible for contract lecturer positions following the collective agreement's guidelines.

    Teaching Skills

    Applicants should have recent experience teaching in an accredited architecture program and be able to teach effectively in both lecture and small group settings within a university environment.

    While teaching experience is preferred, exceptional practitioners without teaching backgrounds may also be considered.

    They should demonstrate inclusive teaching practices, awareness of EDI priorities, and proficiency in personal computer skills relevant to the course.

    Interactive Skills

    They must exhibit effective communication with colleagues and students, teamwork abilities, conflict resolution skills, and respectful conduct as an Instructor, along with empathy, open-mindedness, and commitment to self-improvement. The ability to facilitate respectful classroom discussions involving diverse student identities, perspectives, and experiences is vital.

    Other Requirements

    Applicants are requested to submit samples of their teaching, design, or professional work to showcase their expertise in the field.
