About the Role


The Lead Machine Learning Scientist drives scientific excellence in a specific program stream and is an active participant in program and product delivery, providing insight into their area of expertise and fostering junior scientists' development in the organization.

The Lead Machine Learning Scientist uses their scientific knowledge and applied research experience to direct Amii Startup Partners and Clients' research and development efforts.

They bridge the gap between business opportunities and fundamental ML techniques, providing scientific oversight on technical projects.

They advise clients on the scoping and definition of machine learning projects and coach companies through the iterative stages of the Machine Learning Process Lifecycle (MLPL).

This includes making informed decisions about the data requirements, what modelling techniques should be tested, what technical resources need to be onboarded when more background research is required, and how success will be evaluated.

In addition to guiding startup partners, the Lead MLS will support fundamental research through partnerships with Amii Fellows and their students, working with one of the world's best ML departments.

The role focuses on achieving excellence in three principal accountabilities:

  • Product development and execution
  • People Management
  • Client contract delivery management

Key Responsibilities:


  • Leads the science program design process in a dedicated product stream based on an intimate knowledge of the clients and technology
  • Leads the development, ownership and execution of sciencerelated elements of the product and product roadmap
  • Prioritizes and maintains the science sprint backlog for assigned products, balancing the requirements of stakeholders
  • Works in an Agile environment and continuously reviews the business needs, refine priorities, outlines milestones and deliverables, and identifies opportunities and risks
  • Delivery on ML science requirements in a dedicated product stream
  • Advise industry partners on machine learning projects: write technical reports, present on technical work, implement exploratory data analysis and machine learning modelling techniques
  • Undertakes specific, but limited, planning and advisory roles when opportunities arise that are aligned with their skillset and growth plans
  • Foster external science relationships to capitalize on opportunities to progress work forward

  • Act as a functional supervisor to Machine Learning Scientists, and direct supervisor of Associates, Residents and Interns, review and revise their work, and manage approvals as appropriate
  • Reinforce a path to success by referring to core competencies, key performance indicators, and personal development goals while acting as a functional supervisor
  • Encourage and maintain a problemsolving approach to work while acting as a peer coach and collaborator
  • Take tangible actions to inspire and hold team members to achieve the organization's mission and vision

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Machine Learning or related field with equivalent experience in Machine Learning
  • Masters required, PhD preferred
years of experience developing, training, and evaluating machine learning models in an applied setting.

  • Demonstrated experience as a mentor, coach or people manager.
  • Proficient in at least one programming language eg: Python, Java, C++ or R
  • Able to work with Jupyter notebooks style environments, comfortable with Python based ML and Deep Learning frameworks (e.g. Scikitlearn, Tensorflow, Keras, Pytorch, Transformers, and pandas)
  • Publication record in peerreviewed academic conferences or relevant journal
