TransEd Valley line LRT is looking for a Communications and SCADA Technician to join their team of rail professionals. Reporting to the Infrastructure Manager the Communications and SCADA Technician will be responsible for the maintenance of equipment in passenger stations, the Maintenance and Storage Facility, and Traction Power substation buildings. This role must have the ability to embrace a dynamic working environment that promotes safety, service, quality, motivation and teamwork in a start-up environment.

Connecting Millwoods to downtown Edmonton, the valley line allows commuters to go from the South East of Edmonton to anywhere the LRT stops.


A typical day for the Communications and SCADA Technician

  • Repair, operation and maintenance of Communications and Signalling equipment;
  • Provide technical expertise to subcontractors, project team members and less experienced personnel;
  • Troubleshooting of equipment and operation of portable test equipment, testing devices and special tools towards execution of support activities;
  • To undertake other duties related to the environment of the power assets or of Work as specified by the System Operations Manager in a safe manner;
  • Ensure that the signalling system is properly maintained for maximum safe power availability uptime for revenue service, this includes all subsystems and components including mechanical, electrical, safety interlocks and auxiliary equipment;
  • Confirm operability of enclosure including seals, door mechanisms and locks;
  • Operate equipment required for maintenance of the system. This may include (but is not limited to) aerial work platforms, rail mounted inspection equipment and others. Assist in completing assigned work as laid out in the schedule, understanding that emergencies may arise that necessitate a change in the schedule.
  • Update system software and perform routine tests. Assist other working groups to ensure system operation. Share information freely with colleagues to contribute to the reliability of the communications infrastructure.
  • Report any and all inconsistencies from drawings, prints or mechanical schematics on Communication and Signalling systems. Keep track of calibrated tools. See upcoming issues related to warranty and MOD program and communicate them to ensure efficient work time.
  • Report potential issues and deficiencies to management and engineering.
  • Record status of maintenance and repair work within a Computerized Maintenance Management System via work orders;
  • Ensures work completed meets response time and quality requirements of the Project Agreement;
  • Comply with all internal and external requirements including but not limited to environmental, health and safety, risk management, and fire protection requirements;
  • Other miscellaneous duties as may be assigned.

What you will bring to the team

  • 2 to 4 years in a Traffic or LRT signalling environment, Railway or related industry. Previous experience within rail transit or rail transportation industry considered an asset;
  • Certificate or license in related field. Capable of using computers and control systems. Capable of reading and understanding mechanical/electrical drawings, maintenance manuals and electrical schematics.
  • Basic knowledge of network communication protocols and network device configurations.
  • Five years of experience in a facility maintenance role in an industrial environment;
  • Equipment and system troubleshooting and resolution skills;
  • An aptitude and comfort in using diagnostic computer systems and related software;
  • Familiarity with a Centralized Maintenance Management System;
  • Acquired competency required in mechanical and electronic systems;
  • Experience in providing high quality service to customers & good interpersonal relationships
  • Good judgment & effective in solving practical problems, responds quick, calmly and appropriately to emergency situations;
  • Demonstrate an ability to work efficiently in an unsupervised environment;
  • Demonstrate a strong health, safety, quality, and environmental mindset;
  • Experience or certifications such as Fork Lift, Fall Arrest, working at heights, ESTS etc.
  • Experience working in a LEED certified facility;
  • Ability to work independently, under pressure and adapt to constant change;

  • 24/7 environment Shift work will be required
  • Exposed to all weather conditions including extreme heat and cold
  • Frequently stands, walks, climbs, balances, lefts, bends, and moves objects up to 50 pounds
