MacEachen Institute for Public Policy and Governance at Dalhousie University is a nationally focused, non-partisan, interdisciplinary institute designed to support the development of public policy and to encourage greater citizen engagement. The Institute looks at ways to tackle public policy and governance issues through open discussion with a variety of informed players and aims to serve as the "go to" place provincially, regionally and nationally for rich, robust public policy debate, discussion and research. Reporting to the Scholarly Director, the Communications Officer will deliver effective communications in ways that are innovative, refined, and versatile, in order to raise the profile of the MacEachen Institute and engage a wide range of audiences including the public and private sectors, not-for-profit, students, and academics.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategy insights towards the development of the Institute's longterm growth strategy. Develop and implement short
- and long-term communication plans aligned with the Institute's growth strategy.

  • Assist with the development of research grants and funding proposals by generating knowledgemobilization and communications plans. Translate academic research reports into plain language briefing notes, suitable for policymakers in the public service.
  • Schedule and provide support for a range of inperson, hybrid, or remote meetings and events including symposia, speaker series, panel discussions, roundtables and workshops.
  • Create promotional materials and invitations, and work with partner organizations in the planning of events and projects. Recommend innovative ideas and/or tools to facilitate high quality events that attract diverse audiences. Conduct outreach presentations to potential partners.
  • Monitor all communications coverage and analyze performance metrics. Use metrics and performance data to develop progress reports. Develop and manage contact lists.

Note
The incumbent occasionally may be required to work occasional evenings.

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.


Dalhousie's vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination.

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field such as English, Journalism or Public Relations plus at least three years of related experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Experience in marketing, public relations, reputational management, and/or social media management.
  • Experience working on communications projects in print, media, web, advertising, and social media settings.
  • Event planning experience with excellent organizational and coordination skills.
  • Excellent communication (verbal, written and presentation), interpersonal and collaboration skills with proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Selfmotivated with the ability to work independently and problemsolve while balancing a variety of ongoing projects.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly with MSOffice and Adobe suites, and social media and content management platforms, and the proven ability to learn new programs quickly.

Assets

  • Experience in an academic environment.
  • Knowledge of government operations and policy development.
  • Understanding of the grantwriting process and/or experience writing compelling funding propos
