    Overview

    As the Azure Health and Life Sciences team, we focus on serving the entire healthcare industry with best-in-class tools, services and platform to transform healthcare for every person worldwide. The work our team does impacts millions of patients every year by translating the latest in scientific and technical disciplines to applications across the health and life sciences spectrum. Our researchers and engineers pursue innovation in a range of scientific and technical disciplines to help solve complex challenges in diverse subareas of healthcare from pediatrics to gerontology, from benchtop to bedside.

    As a Senior Applied Scientist , your work will ensure that any and all applications of technology in the patients healthcare journey treats the patient data with respect and upholds Microsoft's high standards for preservation of privacy and data ownership. Our team is actively learning how to leverage the latest technology in Natural Langauge Processing (NLP), image understanding, privacy preservation and others to enable our customers to achieve more with their data.

    Solving privacy challenges in healthcare helps our customers to unlock the power of the data that they have; whether it be in the form of data analytics & monitoring, drug & treatment research, machine learning and other transformative technologies that have previously been siloed away in institutional data centers. The renaissance of foundational models is breathing new life and allowing us to do things that previously were impossible with data. We can detect personal data in audio, text, images and medical scans to unlock the full power & benefit that cloud computing can have to offer. Our customers are using de-identification and other privacy preserving technologies to improve patient care.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics predictive analytics, research) OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR equivalent experience.
  • 1+ year(s) of experience with machine learning and natural language processing.
  • Other Requirement

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Preferred/Additional Qualifications

    Experience with Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning tasks such as Named Entity recognition and Entity Tagging. Knowledge of data mining, cleaning, and measurement.

  • Experience with programming in Python or C#, modern machine learning frameworks and high-performance computing systems.
  • Proven track record of developing and applying NLP or Machine Learning models that power web services or are run on production data.
  • Experience with Healthcare NLP, Medical NLP, Healthcare data, and privacy requirements and considerations for healthcare data.
  • Experience with or knowledge of NLP Privacy research, Multilingual NLP, Multimodal Models, and/or Image Understanding (e.g., optical character recognition, image manipulation, image infill and other image transformation operations).
  • Experience with using and improving result quality from Large Language Models.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop original research agendas.
  • Be able to collaborate effectively with other researchers and product development teams.
  • Applied Sciences IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across Canada is CAD $108,100 - CAD $199,700 per year.

    Responsibilities

    The Senior Applied Scientist for this role will have a passion for research and pushing the boundaries of what's possible, with an eye towards understanding our healthcare partners' problems and solving them with provide the foundation for any data handling application in healthcare.

  • Work alongside experts in NLP, machine learning, healthcare, image processing and other fields to translate state-of-the-art research knowledge into working products to solve customer and product needs.
  • Develop and improve machine learning models, datasets, metrics, training techniques, and model architectures.
  • Write high and performant code that is appropriate for production services.
  • Define and grow applied research at the intersection of AI, Healthcare, and Privacy.
  • Actively engage in collaborative relationships with groups inside or outside of Microsoft.
  • Understand and follow ethics and privacy policies when executing research processes and/or collecting data/information.
