    What You Will Do

    Reporting to the Manager - Environment, this position is responsible for supporting the effective development, implementation and maintenance of TTC's corporate Environmental Plan as part of the TTC's Safety, Health & Environment (SH&E) Management System. The incumbent will provide support on various initiatives as part of the implementation and maintenance of the Waste Management, Discharge Water Quality, Spills, Subsurface Contamination Management and Idling Control Corporate Programs. This will include, but is not limited to, providing oversight and management of the Hazardous Waste Management Contract (Contract), assisting with waste water sampling activities, providing environmental spill response support and report review, development and implementation of environmental training materials.

    You will be provide administrative and technical support for the successful implementation of the consolidated Contract, including reconciliation of monthly invoices ensuring appropriate waste classification, development and maintenance of Contract procedural documentation, maintaining contractor training records, provide direction to TTC departmental stakeholders and coordinate hazardous waste service requests, maintain the Resource Productivity & Recovery Authority (RPRA) hazardous waste management registry website and provide support to TTC facilities and the Hazardous Waste Management Contractor as required, including review and approval of waste manifest documentation, coordinate registration of new user accounts, register new waste classes and facilities, reconcile invoices, and track regulatory compliance (O.Reg 347, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, etc.) and conduct hazardous waste inspections at TTC facilities to ensure compliance with Waste Management regulations, draft inspection reports and follow up on recommended corrective actions.

    You will track and analyze environmental spill reports submitted through the TTC's online SH&E management software solution (i.e. Cority) for common themes to recommend controls or measures to prevent recurrence, provide guidance to TTC departments to ensure proper spill response and clean-up procedures are followed according to the Spills Corporate Program, conduct Spill Contingency Plan checks at TTC facilities to ensure compliance with the Spills Corporate Program, draft inspection reports and follow up on recommended corrective actions and prepare environmental spill reports for the City of Toronto and Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) as required.

    You will assist with annual waste water sampling and testing activities according to the requirements of the Discharge Water Quality Corporate Program, review analytical results, interpret findings and make preliminary recommendations to prevent, eliminate, control and reduce environmental hazards and provide guidance to TTC departments to ensure compliance with the Discharge Water Quality Corporate Program.

    In addition to the above you will assist EAs with creating procedural and educational materials in support of Environmental Corporate Programs, assist with other projects as assigned by the Manager - Environment, perform related duties as assigned and demonstrate behaviours that support diversity, inclusion, and a respectful work and service environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.     What Qualifications Do You Bring?

    • Completion of a post-secondary education (degree or diploma) in Environmental Science, or the equivalent, combined with several years of directly related work experience, OR a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
    • Thorough knowledge of environmental science, environmental engineering or a related discipline combined with comprehensive knowledge of the Environmental Protection Act and other environmental legislation applicable to TTC operations;
    • Knowledge, understanding and experience in the principles and practices of hazardous waste management, including relevant regulations such as O. Reg 347, General - Waste Management and Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations
    • Must have or acquire a thorough knowledge of the RPRA hazardous waste management registry website
    • Thorough understanding of environmental principles and practices as well as issues which face the transit industry;
    • Experience in the development, implementation and management of environmental management systems including waste management, environmental approvals and registrations, spills, chemical management, subsurface contamination, wastewater and vehicle idling;
    • Good knowledge of the MECP and Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) organization, policies and practices and their relationship to the transit industry;
    • Experience in managing external contracts, including reconciliation of invoices to ensure fiscal responsibility based on negotiated contract pricing
    • Knowledge, understanding and experience with reviewing Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to determine storage, handling and disposal of the product or associated waste
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of records management
    • Sound working knowledge of computers and proficient in computer applications related to work (e.g. Microsoft suite)
    • Several years of directly related experience in the environmental field
    • Well-developed verbal, written and presentation communication skills
    • Sound judgement; well-developed oral communication and report writing skills; strong interpersonal, organizational, analytical and problem solving skills
    • Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.
