In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

    Organizational Status

    The vision of the UBC Department of Emergency Medicine is to be a provincially integrated Department committed to clinical, academic, and health care delivery leadership, founded in the creation and exchange of knowledge to improve emergency care. Our faculty members across the province have an impressive record of research and discovery related to prevention of emergencies, improving clinical care, and system improvements. Our Royal College residency training program, distributed across four program sites, is the largest in the country providing high-quality emergency training. The Department of Emergency Medicine has also played a leadership role in the development and implementation of the BC Emergency Medicine Network which integrates and translates knowledge and experiences to support emergency practitioners across the province.

    The Digital Emergency Medicine research program, led by Dr. Kendall Ho, conducts research on the use of digital technologies to improve healthcare delivery and raising digital health literacy. Digital Emergency Medicine carries out research, community engagement, and educational activities to explore how modern information and communication technologies (e.g. mobile and web-based applications, etc.) can improve health care.

    Reports to Manager, Technology Research and Program Administration. Works closely with the Lead and Associate Lead, DigEM, Research Portfolio Coordinators, other project coordinators and
    researchers.

    On behalf of DigEM, interacts and works with various stakeholders external to UBC including health providers, study participants, government agencies, funding agencies, non-profit and for-profit organizations and suppliers/contractors. On behalf of DigEM, interacts and works with UBC and Faculty stakeholders (e.g. Office of Research Services, University-Industry Liaison Office, Dean s Office, etc.).

    Work Performed

    • Performs as assigned, procedural and administrative aspects of assigned technology/research projects including monitoring and tracking of the budget for assigned components of the program;
    • Serves as a point-of-contact for project participants and partners;
    • Contributes to the development of project plans and critical paths for successful completion of projects and project deliverables;
    • Contributes to needs analysis, functional requirements specifications and conceptual solution design for technology/research projects;
    • Supports development and conduct of standardized test protocols for evaluating and validating proof-of-concept/prototype digital health solutions;
    • Oversees, participates in or conducts data collection, analysis and write-up and monitors/guides staff/project team members in research activities (e.g., prepares ethics reviews, conducts surveys, interviews, focus groups, as well as analysis and write-up, etc.);
    • Develops and implements systems for data administration and analysis for assigned projects;
    • Contributes to co-developing and drafting publications, conference presentations, and other project dissemination activities;
    • Liaises with principal/co-investigators, partners, Steering Committees, and DigEM management and staff who work on assigned projects and related activities;
    • Participates as member, and where assigned, chairs project Steering Committees and provides reports on progress;
    • Contributes to and performs project/initiative promotions, communications, advocacy, knowledge sharing and dissemination;
    • Provides reports regarding ongoing project operations, helps monitor the day-to-day progress of projects or project components, and provides regular updates;
    • Provides team communications, updates, and reports;
    • Drafts sections of grant applications and works collaboratively with investigators to write and submit funding proposals and progress reports;
    • Conducts and coordinates surveys, interviews, focus groups, as well as analysis and write-up of findings;
    • Procures and negotiates service contracts and invoices as needed;
    • Manages member/participant recruitment and registration for project events and studies as needed;
    • Works independently or in a team depending upon project needs;
    • Oversee the work of Research Assistants, students, and volunteers on project teams;
    • Contributes to and performs exploration and support for DigEM office and project digital platforms where applicable, including the DigEM office website, related DigEM project websites and other digital solutions used or evaluated by DigEM
    • Work on weekends or outside of regular work hours on occasion to carry out the duties of position;
    • Performs other related duties and projects within scope of position.

    Consequence of Error/Judgement

    The incumbent is expected to maintain a close working relationship with DigEM management and staff, Investigators and external stakeholders, in order to ensure the success, quality (effectiveness and efficiency) and timeliness of outcomes. This position requires working effectively within an organizational structure. The incumbent will be required to exercise good judgment and make sound decisions as these have the potential to impact DigEM s reputation, program viability, and the opportunity for future partnerships.

    Reports to the Manager, Technology Research and Program Administration or as designated for projects and duties.

    Coordinates, assigns, and oversees work (e.g., data collection, analysis) of students, support staff, and volunteers and/or as assigned within the scope of the position.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Masters preferred.
    • Preference will be given to candidates with engineering and/or sciences education combined with research and evaluation skills.
    • Experience with, and aptitude for, new and emerging technologies in the field of medical and health care (e.g. wearables, sensors, information communication technologies, consumer health products and services, Internet of Things, machine learning, cloud technology, etc.), an asset.
