- Creating Connection Designs in support of Project Requirements
- Constructability Analysis
- Supports Bid Pursuits
- Participates in the project kick-off meeting, where scope, schedule and budget are discussed and challenges addressed; review how the job is going to be completed.
- Identifies obstacles and opportunities for improvement before design is completed to reduce or prevent error, delays and cost overrun. Provides supporting rationale and calculations to support these value engineering alternates in front of the design engineer if required.
- Participates in design and constructability review sessions and project meetings to collect and disseminate technical information pertaining to the project.
- Provides the design of connections in conformance with the contract drawings and specifications, and prepares RFI's to request missing information.
- Provides Detailers with design sketches for 3D modeling purposes, and any other information or instruction required, that would assist in the fabrication, detailing and erection of steel.
- Assesses the 3D model and recommends changes if the connections don't meet the appropriate load or erection requirements. Monitors all connection designs.
- Troubleshoot problems during the fabrication or erection e.g. the details don't work as designed, or to address fitting or welding errors and omissions.
- Represents the interests of Walters in technical meetings with clients, design engineers and architects.
- Builds spreadsheets or other tools to streamline the design process or to allow detailers to design connections.
- In consultation with Field Services and the Project Manager, determines the sequencing of the proposed construction to ensure structural stability at all stages of erection.
- Offers practical solutions for temporary support and stability during the erection of complex structures. Prepares the appropriate engineering designs and documents.
- Ensures that safety of the workers is built into all aspects of the project. Designs lifting devices, fall arrest systems, and other temporary aids to ensure the erection is safe and efficient.
- Reviews crane plans and all critical crane picks.
- Analyzes clients' drawings and specifications and prepares a high level design that ensures structure stability; determines material requirements, costs and shop times to advise the estimators on appropriate connections, details and temporary works.
- Provides input in the pricing, estimating and scoping strategies for proposed projects and in the development and preparation of technical qualifications.
- Assists in the preparation of bid narratives, outlining the plan to engineer, detail, fabricate, ship and erect the structure.

- A university degree in the engineering field (civil/structural).
- Professional Engineer license in one of the provinces (preferably Ontario).
- A minimum of 5 years of engineering experience with responsibility for engineering of complex structures.
- Experience in the steel construction industry.

- Knowledge in structural steel fabrication, connections and erection practices.
- Ability to read structural and architectural drawings.
- Analytical and Problem Solving skills.
