Position Profile:


  • The Harm Reduction Specialist will report to the Manager of Health Promotion and will lead the harm reduction provision within the programs and shelters by providing oversight, coordination, and education of Our Place Peel's Harm Reduction program to support harm reduction practices. Working from a trauma informed framework and strengthsbased perspective, the Harm Reduction Specialist will support in the development of harm reduction plans with youth to reduce the risks associated with substance use. They will provide overdose prevention, education, and harm reduction supply distribution to support youth in accessing harm reduction programs and services. The Harm Reduction Specialist will also provide dropin services for youth to access harm reduction supports and address substance use and education on positive sexual health practices. The Harm Reduction Specialist will oversee the existing service agreement with Peel Public Health to provide education, resources, training, and supplies related to harm reduction, implement harm reduction practices, and support the development of harm reduction plans focused on the recovery model and stages of change.

Role Overview:


  • Supervise harm reduction across all programs and shelters at Our Place Peel.
  • Working from a trauma informed framework and strengthsbased perspective, provide short term case management, brief counselling, overdose prevention education and harm reduction supply distribution to support youth in accessing harm reduction programs and services.
  • Implement harm reduction practices and lead in the development of harm reduction plans focused on the recovery model and stages of change.
  • Provide brief counseling and education to youth regarding emerging and persistent challenges related to substance use.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops to address substance use and positive sexual health practices.
  • Responsible for substance use support group development, facilitation, implementation, data compilation, and evaluation.
  • Provide expertise, guidance, support, trainings and consultation to staff on overdose prevention, education, and harm reduction best practices.
  • Compile statistical information and prepare monthly reports as required for program evaluation and development (i.e., NEO system).
  • Create a safe and secure setting for all youth accessing services at Our Place Peel.
  • Ensure that professional standards are maintained as related to client documentation and case management.
  • Ensure that the facility meets health and safety standards.
  • Foster a positive and supportive working environment.
  • All other duties as required in the successful management of shelter operations while partnering with all stakeholders in support of organizational success.

Qualifications:


  • University degree or equivalent in related social services field.
  • 13 years of professional experience with a focus on supporting youth experiencing homelessness, mental health concerns and substance use.
  • Experience in crisis support, harm reduction and crisis intervention and brief counseling.
  • Cultural competency sensitivity and commitment to working through an EDIB, antioppressive, antiracism framework.
  • Proficiency in data collection and statistical reporting an asset.
  • Knowledge of trauma informed care, and harm reduction practices an asset.
  • Understanding of issues relating to youth homelessness and the barriers youth face in attaining and maintaining their housing, as well as an understanding of the broader housing sector in Peel.
  • Willingness to travel and must be able to work flexible hours including weekends, evenings and holidays and work at Brampton and/or Mississauga location.
  • Working knowledge of applicable legislation, such as the Ontario Works Act and Ontario Disability Support Program, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and the Mental Health Act.
  • Valid CPI/UMAB and First Aid/CPR certifications.
  • A valid Ontario's full G Driv
