    Employee & Labour Relations Specialist

    Primary Purpose of the Position

    As an expert in employee and labour relations, the Employee & Labour Relations Specialist backs the University's triumph by developing and advocating for people and labour strategies that create a positive and fruitful culture aligning all organizational levels with the University's mission, vision, and values. Additionally, this role offers strategic support, specialized advice, and expertise in all employee and labour relations matters, addressing Collective Agreements, legislation, policies, procedures, and workplace concerns for HR Strategic Business Advisors (HR SBA's), Human Resources Specialists, Senior Administration, and other key stakeholders.

    Based in the central Human Resources (HR) department under the Office of the Associate Vice-President, People & Chief Human Resources Officer, the Employee & Labour Relations Specialist reports to the Director, Employee & Labour Relations.

    This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating employee and labour relations policies, programs, services, and processes that align with and advance the University's strategic goals.

    The Specialist collaborates in interdisciplinary project teams to research and devise effective solutions for organizational initiatives, encouraging diverse perspectives and individuals.

    Key Activities

    • Ensures a systemic approach in creating and delivering employee and labour relations strategies, policies, programs, services, and best practices that align with institutional goals.
    • Devises bargaining strategies to ensure agreements are in line with the University's strategic directions.
    • Leads a variety of employee and labour relations projects, including collective bargaining, grievance processes, organizational restructuring, interpretation of collective agreements, and more.
    • Provides expertise and development support to HR Strategic Business Advisors and senior leaders.
    • Maintains positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
    • Ensures compliance with policies, collective agreements, and legislation.
    • Promotes a culture of diversity, equity, and respect.
    • Collaborates with legal counsel on employment matters.
    • Encourages responsible risk-taking based on data-driven decision-making.

    Education and Experience

    • A relevant bachelor's degree and 5 to 10 years of HR experience required.
    • Experience in multiple HR areas essential.
    • Strong project management, negotiation, and communication skills needed.
    • Experience in inclusive and unionized environments is a must.
    • Preferably holds a Chartered Professionals in Human Resources designation.
