Fire Weather Network Technician - Edmonton, Canada - Government of Alberta

    Default job background
    Description

    Role Responsibilities

Being a Fire Weather Network Technician involves overseeing and maintaining a real-time automated fire weather network. This network provides data that follows standards set by the Canadian Forest Fire Danger rating system, the World Meteorological Organization, and Environment Canada. The information obtained through satellite and cellular modem connections plays a vital role in timely and accurate data reporting for assessing and predicting fire weather and fire danger conditions in Alberta.

This position manages a province-wide meteorological network that is essential for government agencies and non-government organizations when making crucial environmental and economic decisions. The data gathered is critical for monitoring various factors such as lightning strikes, precipitation in all seasons, wind speed and direction, air temperature, relative humidity, snow depth, net radiation, soil temperature, and soil moisture.

As a Fire Weather Network Technician, your duties will include:

    • Overseeing the site development, operation, and maintenance of the real-time automated fire weather network.
    • Providing on-field support for maintaining and troubleshooting the Alberta Wildfire Lightning Detection System.
    • Handling projects, schedules, and priorities to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the fire weather network.
    • Collaborating with other organizations to ensure consistency and compatibility with similar networks, such as Alberta Agriculture & Irrigation, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and Water Survey Canada.
    • Offering maintenance and assistance for the radiosonde system.
