Position Overview

  • Independently performs gross examinations of surgical pathology specimens.

Primary Responsibilities
Performs gross examination of surgical pathology specimens


Gross examinations will include:

  • Dissection, visual examination and assessment.
  • Selection of tissues for microscopic examination, including preparation for special stains.
  • Description of and dictation of specimens for medical record.
  • Reveiwong transcribed gross dissection in LIS and correction as required
  • Consultation with staff pathologist when required with respect to complex specimens.
  • Obtaining further clinical, radiological and laboratory data when indicated.
  • Decision making is required for:
  • Selection of most appropriate tissue sample representative of the disease process. (Inappropriate orientation and cutting of larger specimens could limit or preclude microscopic diagnosis by the Pathologist thus rendering the irreplaceable tissue sample useless. In this event the clinician could be unable to diagnose or treat the patient).
  • Proper description of specimens in a concise and clear manner so that both the pathologist and the responsible physician can interpret the specimen properly when reading the surgical pathology report.

Education

  • Medical /Science Degree graduate with formal training in anatomy and medical terminology or General CMLTO registration with 1 year recent work experience in anatomical/surgical pathology, preferred

Experience

  • Recent experience in gross dissection and knowledge of gross pathology in normal and disease states is an asset
  • Knowledge of human anatomy, required
  • Knowledge of medical and technical terminology, required
  • Experience with an LIS and voice recognition transcription system is an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated independent critical thinking with the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and beflexible if there are changes
  • Ability to continuously learn and accommodate change
  • Good attendance record required
